I have the great pleasure to run on Wednesday evry few weeks with the great Eamonn Tierney ...Eamonn was a superb runner in his day...He is still pretty decent considering he does not 'really' train. A run with him is an insight into Athletics, how it was back in the 70s & 80s when we had really great runners , really great world class distance runners . Its a run I look forward immensley to as its non stop chat the whole way and he is a full of great stories , great nuggets of info ...
Anyway today we were chatting about marathons and for whatever reason I just posed the question ' Who was the last Irishman to win a marathon ' ( excluding home marathons or Polar marathons etc etc ) ..Eamonn won the Glasgow marathon in 1987 ( September) but we racked the brains to think of anyone after this ...start thinking and researching please and share any info ...ta

Treacy won Dublin in 1993 and if that's not allowed, LA in 1992.

Of course, Catherina the Great won London and Amsterdam in '98.

John Treacy's winning time was 2.12.29.
Tommy Hughes won the Marrakesh Marathon in 1988 in 2.15.48. He ran it again ( I think he finished 2nd ) in 1992 in a time of 2.13.59 and won the Robin Hood Marathon last year in a time of 2.29.14 at 50 years of age.
There have been other Irish winners over the years. I'll dig up the details.
