Windows 7 Service Pack Update Error

I am trying to update my laptop with the latest Windows 7 Service Pack, but I keep getting an 'error transactional conflict' issue. The updates download fine, but then when I restart the machine, it tries to update, gets to 15% and then says 'error update fail' and returns the settings and restarts the machine. I have been trying to update for 4 weeks now, and it is getting a bit annoying. Any suggestions?

    Many thanks

instead of using the windows update to do the update, have you tried downloading the service pack and running it that way?

I'm getting the same error OP. Will try and download directly from Windows' website.

The Windows Update log should have a list of updates installed recently and any errors that stop them from installing. Start Windows Update, and on the left hand side click on View update history. In the update history see if you can spot any entries to do with Service Pack 1, and double-click on them to see any error messages and codes associated with them. :)

    Hello,

Windows 7 is a wonderful operating system. It is beautiful, fast and is packed with very interesting features. Sometimes, the Windows 7 service pack one update fails. The solution to this problem largely depends on what type of error you are receiving. Before doing anything specific, you can attempt to clear the problem through two generic solutions. Firstly, you can try fixing the problem using the Windows' troubleshooter: click on the Start orb, select Control Panel > Troubleshooting and there the Fix problems with Windows Update link. Secondly, you can try the System Update Readiness tool for Windows 7. You can download the tool from the website of Microsoft. The code for the update is KB947821. Download the tool compatible with your system (32-bit or 64-bit). This tool checks your system for inconsistencies that are hindering the update process.

    Thanks a lot again

Well in the end I got onto Microsoft support etc and it turned out to be my Avast Antivirus that was blocking the updates. I uninstalled it, updated Windows and then reinstalled Avast. All works now!
