well if your on JSA you will be means tested against her income, as she earns a fairly good wage expect to get very little from the dole.

do families with two kids actually live on 550 a week??
if we are having a girl we will need to rent a three bed , if thats the case it really does look like her going on the labour is better off , im honestly a hard working chap thats out of work because of the building boom collapse , i can see why so much fraud happens now, i never would have stuck up for anyone purposely on benefits before but what other option is there

Families have survived on a lot less than 550 a week. I would check out the social welfare rates before you advise her to give up her job. If you lived together and you get job seekers she would probably be a dependent adult.
So thats 188 for you 124.80 for her for and 29.80 for each child. Think thats less than 550 per week. You would get rent allowance though probably but she would have to apply for it in her name as you have to have been renting privately for 6 months before you become eligible for it. You would get a medical card too. Has your GF applied for FIS ?? She may eligible for some payment especially with two kids.

If she has prsi contributions then you may be better off for a while.

Also where in the name of god are you in the country that she is paying 850 for a two bed ??? You would not even pay that for a three bed here.

And if she just leaves her job to go on the dole she will be disqualified for the first 9 weeks.

No, working families have a magic tree that has money instead of leaves

The building boom collapse was a few years ago now. I know a guy who finished his leaving cert a few weeks ago, applied for a job in a bookies and got it. Makes ya think.

ALSO.. there's no such payment as "the labour". You're referring to Jobseekers assistance. It's only available to people actively seeking employment.

tenchi fan your hatred is lovely thanks ,
i spent the building boom as an apprentice , i am now waiting for my papers , people dont realise that office or shop jobs wont take lads from a building site and give them work because they think they will turn up in their steel caps and vis vests , id work in mcdonalds if theyd give me work , i have been toold in interviews that basically the money is **** and it usually suits polish lads , i told them id still be interested , i never got a call back , i want to work , if you want to go on the dole and give me your job id happily take it , you know 88 per cent of new jobs in the uk went to foreigners last year , teasco advertise for managers in slovakia , i spend every day looking for work , its about once a month i get a reply letter saying sorry we will keep you on file the other 1000 e mails i send off dont even get a reply , ive even tried to make a poxy statue out of rubber bands and straws for a 20 hour a week job in ikea in front of 30 other people all doing the same which would have earned me about 20 quid more than the labour , you are an arrogant twit , i hope you dont get a dose of reality anytime soon

If you did move in with her and with two kids I can understand why you do, you might not be too bad if she continued to work. You could mind the kids so no childcare costs and as a family you probably would get FIS family income supplement. I dont know the rates off the top of my head you would have to check them out. If your next is a girl it will be a few years before she needs her own room so you might get away with a two bed for a while yet. You do need to be realistic about living only on social welfare though as a family. Its not a gravy train by any means it can be tough going. No bonus at Christmas and the rates are getting cut all the time. Its not something to do willingly especially when you have one good job between you at the moment. Best of luck with it all though

Its not just builders that have problems in the workforce. I could get nothing with my degree and ended up in a min wage job and glad of it. There are not too many jobs around for anyone here foreign national or Irish. That's why I would think twice about getting your GF to give up her job. Still you have to do whats best for your family. Just do your research well and dont assume anything

Your girlfriend will be getting maternity leave anyway, seen as shes pregnant.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,923 ✭✭✭cloptrop

ah but paddy the plot thickens , a 7 month old baby is in the fold , she had maternity leave for that so what she is intitled to throughout the maternity leave this time is half her wages , so 275 a week , thatll pay rent and leave about 200 quid for bills food etc for the month , fun times

Yea, I'm pretty arrogant. But who's the guy suggesting telling his girlfriend to quit her job and sign on benefits?

18 months ago I was looking for someone to paint a few rooms.. in the end got a useless twat who charged €100 a day and didn't bother turning up one day. More recently i know someone who got a painted for €60 a day.. either way, I'm convinced there's still some work out there for young, able-bodied people who show initiative.

who's fault is that? anyway, there's always family income supplement, rent supplement and various other allowances for people who earn below a certain amount.

First of all OP I completely understand your situation. AFAIK you would be better off staying out of the house from your gf as the social welfare would only be more than happy to cut the ****e out of any payments you are recieving. I would go to speak with the Citizens Advice and try and find out what the best option is for you and your family.

    Best of luck to ye.

P.S. What exactly are u on about with the rubber bands and straw ?

ikea had a big recruitment drive when they opened their new shop in dublin . they were holding group interviews , where 30 people were being interviewed at a time , one of the degrading tasks they gave us in this interview/gameshow/attack on my self respect was compete against everyone else to make an ornament out of a few rubber bands ,straws , some paper and the cardboard part off a tray of dog food , ,,,,,,,this was a 20 hour a week job on minimum wage but it was more like an episode of the apprentice ,,,,,,,, some of the best people in this interview went on to great things like collecting the trolleys in the car park ,,,,,
them 200 jobs conduit announced that they had was the same type of interview but less degrading , all these jobs that get announced on the news are like this , they are advertising campaigns , any decent job is gone before it even gets advertised to somebodys friend or family ,
but there will be naysayers that heard of somebody they know that got a job before and say everyone on the labour is just lazy , i actually heard someone just out of college got a job in a bookies before(see above one of tenchi fan s posts) go him and his college education

Why? Certainly very far down the line it would be nice but you certainly don't need to go renting a three bed house the second the child is born. A newborn will spending most of it's time with it's mother at the start and then when old enough to can share with it's sibling regardless of gender. Contrary to what people seem to think there is no law about silbings of different genders having to have their own rooms. Certainly older kids would perfer their own space but with less then a year between your kids they can share a room for quite a number of years. I know plenty of single mums living in studio flats with two kids so the idea that you need to go rent a three bedroom house for two kids under the age of 1 is nonsense.

And the notion that 80% of jobs are going to foreigners is rubbish that the Daily Mail likes to write but actual has no basis in facts. Very quick search of empolyment satistics will tell you that.

had to leave my job for this reason, i was earning too much, she would have lost all her benefits and now we earn more on the fole than if i was working
its a joke especially looking at the amount of wasters who never want to work
