Hi Folks, moving house and I'm wondering it is possible to transfer the contents of my UPC box on to my iomega media player as I've got a lot of stuff that won't be repeated and isn't available to buy recorded on it which I would really like to keep.

Now, I wouldn't be the most tech savvy :o so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

P.S. Not sure if this is the right forum. Mods - please feel free to move.

No unless you have a tuner card in your laptop. You would feed the video into the laptop via the tuner card, record the video into a video file and if you then want a dvd from it, convert again to VOB and burn to dvd. Even if you could access the files from the dvr, they are all encrypted.

The other option would be to record everything using a dvd recorder. Would assume the dvd's it creates are unprotected so should be easy to rip

Recording to a DVD recorder is your easiest option. It has to be done in real time though i.e. press record on the DVD, then press play on the UPC box, sit back and wait for it to end.

You could then rip the DVDs to your PC and transfer to your media player.

Unless it's something really rare I wouldn't bother because of all the hassle.

Ok, so I have a dvd recorder. Do I just connect it via a scart into the telly? I'm not sure how to pick up the signal off the tv - an AV channel perhaps? Forgive me but I am not very tech savvy... :o

Also, I'm guessing that if I do a straight record process that I won't get much more than an hour on the dvd? That would be a pain as some of the shows are 2 hours long or thereabouts.

I know it's a lot of hassle but I really like the shows (mainly music and rare docs) and wouldn't like to loose them...

The box actually just saves the transport stream, which means that even if you could get it off it that you wouldn't be able to decrypt it.

What !!!!!!! I have transferred dozens of hours of recordings to dvd and they play back on my dvd recorder no problem.

yeah, because you are playing it in realtime and recording the video/audio output.

The recorded file on the STB's HDD is an encrypted stream(Nagravision 3), which is then decrypted with your card when played back.

Now be careful. Discussion of cracking Nagravision is banned here.
