noise after timing belt change mondeo.

I got the t belt done on my mark 2 1.8 td mondeo 2 weeks ago, there was a noise like a belt whirring/squealing loudly after it and the mechanic said the alternator belt needed changing, went back out he did that, and showed me also that the bearing of the alternator pulley seems to be gone, as there is movement in it.

first question does the timing belt run at the same speed all the time, or does it go faster the more revs ?

the car sounds so rough now since the belt change, particularly when revving and braking. could it be the fact the bearing is gone in the pulley?

or what else could it be, when i listen to the engine whilst it's idling it sounds like its coming from inside the timing belt cover. the mechanic says it's just the pulley and he will change that, but it never sounded like that prior to the t belt change, always for an old car sounded smooth enough engine wise. I just want my smoother sounding engine back.

The timing belt connects the crankshaft at the bottom of the engine to the cam's at the top. The faster the engine goes, the faster the belt goes. At the bottom, there will be 2 pulley's, the other pulley is for the water pump, alternator and/or air con compressor.

Let the mechanic change the pulleys to rule them out.

ok that sounds like a plan will say it to him, they wouldnt have been standard in the tb kit by chance?

Did he replace the water pump too? If there is movement on the alternator pulley well then it could well be a bearing gone in it. Can you rev the engine(turn the throttle on the pump, cable will be on it) and listen to the alternator, its straight down i think. The sound should be fairly obvious where its coming from.

he said the water pump didnt need changing he checked it and it was fine, is this the norm on the mondeo, or should it be done every time?

yeh I did that and to me the sound still sounded from under the tb cover, which is more or less in front of the alternator. sound can travel in engines I believe though??

I really feel with the tractor noise of the car that he's fecked up something doing the belt, if it was not on right, or timed right it wouldnt be noisey i presume? it just wouldn't either start or idle right?

patrickc if this helps at all however not same car as yours - i've a 1.8i petrol mazda 626 - had tb changed 2 weeks ago too - noise coming from inside tb cover prior to new tb - changed tb and water pump - noise inside tb cover now gone however a new high pitched squealing noise has just started this evening - got new alternator belt fitted too as old one was gone to the wire and reckon new noise coming from there - this high pitchd squealing noise has been there before

If the timing belt has been adjusted too tightly it will make a peculier humming noise. The other items mentioned could be the cause of the noise but the only thing that has changed is the timing belt.
