Problem with sound (none) after wiping hard drive

Hi, I'd a nasty virus on my laptop that even though we deleted its root file etc after restarting it was back there so I got the hard drive wiped and re-installed the OS. The sound card is detected and I'm told its working normally (no conflicts etc) but the volume control tells me there are no sound devices and I can't hear CDs or RTE player etc.

Any ideas and hopefully you can understand my post!?
