Then get 2 skodas. Keep one spare skoda in the boot, if one stops working remove the spare one from the boot and push the broken skoda into the boot of the spare one and carry on

Was actually thinking the same thing. They look like the standard seats. No matter though. Looks nice and the suspension wouldn't be as hard if it's an SE.

Since when are Skodas not reliable? Is it just the Diesel or also Petrol ones that give trouble?

Both have problems like all the VAG family. Do a search here as we're dragging this OT.

A +1 on the Mondeo suggestion. They are pretty reliable, eat up the miles with ease and are so plentiful that finding a decent one should not be too hard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

Ah they're still pretty reliable in fairness. The 2.0 PD engine wasn't great but they aren't unreliable cars either.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

In the last 5 months mine has spend about 4 weeks off the road. It's left me stranded three times. I've missed a lot of time in work as a result. I had a similar experience with a Leon previously. They are/were not high mileage or abused cars either.

I know of others that have had some problems and sone that hasn't. There are more reliable options for the money than a VAG.

Why the preference for Diesel? How much mileage per annum?

My pick if the price went down considerably http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2286545

Complete rubbish, Skodas have taken 3 out of the top 5 places in nearly every JD POWER survey for the past 5 yrs (at least) for reliability and overall customer satisfaction. Whether you like the brand or not is perfectly acceptable but don't tar them with the VAG brush just because other VAG's are unreliable (VW have struggled on occasion to get in to the top 50 of the same JD POWER surveys).

Up to recently I sold car parts, like timing belts, clutches, DMF, most of these would have been for VAG cars. And we sold for every make.... To me that tells a story.

Over half a million miles over 10 years of trouble free driving behind the wheel of 4 Skodas (still own 3 of them and the one I sold is still driving perfectly) tells a story to me.
You (and anyone else) cannot lump Skoda reliability in with VW or VAG reliability just because of shared components. That's like saying "your cousin is a drug dealer so you've got to be dodgy as well".
BTW, Skoda have finished in the top 5 of the JD POWER survey for the past thirteen years, not the past five as I mentioned earlier.

Answer some of the questions people have asked and you might get better quality responses.

I doubt you will now though.

Very small compared to the equivalent Passat - especially in the rear legroom department

With your budget I'd imagine you're looking at the 06-ish vintage? I looked at the same model at the time and as well as the above, I found it very dated inside (reminded me of my 02 Passat) and overpriced for what it was. I don't know if it has the infamous PD engine in that model, but as mentioned above they can become a nightmare if injectors start failing!

    But that's me...

Personally I'd rather the bigger A6 (out of your - and my - budget though!) or maybe something a bit different like a Passat CC (though they seem to have become very common too in the last year)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 168 ✭✭jack888

Those Passat cc are around 20k

had some vags , never had trouble once properly maintain . even '97 passat 1.9 tdi brought me across europe (around 3 k miles) without any hint of trouble.

I never had skoda, but i have bad feelings, might i am wrong.

Anyway ... there is list approx of what i would choose from (vag group).

correct me if i am wrong - the average mileage for a car is expected to be 15k kms per year. but most of these toyotas, VWs, Hondas have already clocked 100k kms in 4years. is it a good idea to buy 100k kms mileage car?

my wife in 12 months done 20 k km, working 5 days a week, and some times we are going down to country ....
i think 100 k kms in 4 years are company cars, or leasing cars, nobody never care of them, just was used as work horse.
I would keep away from them.

That's small mileage really. 25k km a year is very close to average, especially on diesels. And a lot of company cars have better service historys than privately owned cars. Sweeping generalisations like that don't stack up at all. A car should be judged on its merits.

Well ... i believe you are right, but i know couple companies, where i was working before, they never care about cars, ... 1 year old van was nearly impossible to drive (24/7 -365, patrols and key handling), ... and in current company ... they just change oils and filters .... never ever change any another liquids .... power steering on van wining good time now... when i spoke with manager about this, he said .. cutbacks, no money, you got nct, you must be happy.

I've seen a good few of the 05/06 honda 2.2 diesel engined accords on ebay.co.uk with either blown engines or reconditioned/replaced engines when the go over 120k miles.....

Lovely looking car but even the model before...I have a friend who has a 1.8i petrol one 3 years and has gone through a 2nd hand gearbox and a reconditioned gearbox although the car now has 210 miles on her as a taxi.

I think Honda make better motorcycles than cars....
