Audi A6 - good deal?

I've been offered a 2005 A6 2L TD for €11K - this is the trade in price offered to a friend who owns it now and wants to trade up. There is ~70K miles on it and it has been well looked after while he's had it. I was thinking of changing my own car to a diesel as I drive ~3-400 miles a week now. Does this sound like a bargain that can't be missed?

Carzone has 12-13K for similar cars...

I'd give it a miss - those 2.0 TDI PD engines give fierce trouble.

The V6 diesels are more reliable, as well as faster and quieter (though more expensive to run obviously).

+1 Massive trouble with the fuel injectors on the 2.0PD engines stay away from them! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

Thanks for the feedback. So what kind of thing should I be looking at for around the same price: 10K or so? 320D any better?

Nothing wrong with a V6 (2.7 or 3.0) TDI A6 really, plus because of the uniquely Irish fear of anything with an engine greater than 2.0 litres, they're cheaper to buy as well. You're paying less to buy a better car:)!

320ds (and 520ds) suffer from swirl flap and turbo failure, swirl flap failure means the engine is a write off - it is possible to buy blanking plates for the flaps for €300, and if the crankcase breather is changed at every third service, then you won't have turbo failure either:)!

I don't think it's a fear - it's the ridiculous increased costs in tax and insurance that put most people off.

Me I'd love a nice 2.7 TDI A6 (in that nice dark gunmetal grey mated to the autobox - having had 4 auto's, I can't drive manuals anymore! :))

I though audi's were supposed to be reliable.

    Style over substance then.

Volkswagens and audi's have a great reputation for reliability.
This has been built up by spending millions on TV Ads telling us this, instead of spending the same money on actually engineering the cars properly.

    LOL!

    4 months into RS6 ownership

    Gearbox refurb -2,300 GBP
Coilpack and spark plug - 150 - GBP
Audi dealer service (never again due to the quality) rather than the ridiculous -600 GBP
    Tyres - 750 GBP
    Coolant problem - 420 EUR
There is something else as well for about 300 GBP... but I done my best to suppress it from memory!

Agree 100% with the Irish "fear" - of paying more tax, which lets face it, it's a deal breaker with most people's budgets.

re:the BMW issues.....why would you even bother buying a diesel from them?
And I thought Audi/Vw group were bad, jesus, that is heartbreaking stuff.
Especially for a "Premium badge" !! Pffff

Merc is no better - the newer generation Blue Efficiency diesels give trouble with the injectors.

The six cylinder diesels are much more reliable in both BMWs and Audis.

The four cylinders are merely afterthoughts for stupid markets like Ireland - you don't see too many four cylinder 5 series or A6s in Germany - they all buy the big 3.0 litre diesels, indeed in Germany the 530d is the most popular model.

The big German cars are really good cars, when they have a decent sized engine (2.5 litre minimum) and lots of toys.

Let's face it, you don't buy a modern German car if you want absolute reliability, you buy it because of the badge;)!

Old German cars were extremely well engineered (I remember when Mercs were like tanks and they felt really expensively made, the diesels could do 500,000 miles and the petrols were a bit less reliable, being able to do "only" 300,000 miles, nowadays cars are built to last just 300,000 km or 186,000 miles so you can see how much of a decline there has been in standards), and were well capable of doing massive mileage, but those days are long gone.
