    hi there

is it possible to buy a sky+ box online and get a local installer to set it up? sky are charging a lot for the box and setup for existing customers and was wondering is there any way around this?

Have you tried telling them you are cancelling and going freesat instead? Some people have had success in getting better deals this way.

Thats crazy money for what you are getting. You would get a good 2nd hand Sky HD box for that on adverts.ie.

Go back to sky, tell them u are cancelling as you find it difficullt to record tv with their setup. Tell them UPC have offered you a recorder that will pause live tv, etc. They will offer you a sky hd box for free straight away. Especially as you subscribe to sky sports.

(Even if they "call your bluff" they do not cancel sub straight away, one months notice. You can call back within month to say you changed your mind

You really should go for it. A sky+ box will transform your viewing. Threaten to cancel and you could well end up with a gleaming HD box for €29. I did :D

No idea but theres zero harm in trying.
I'll be doing the same shortly on behalf of my father in law. He just bought a new samsung TV, lovely one.
He has a fairly old box but has the sports package.
He uses a magic eye to put the box on another TV as well in the house, the only thing stopping me ringing sky at the moment to see if we can get a HD box is the fact that I amnt sure if he will need a new magic eye to work with the new box.
I dont think theres any harm in ringing these providers every now and again and threaten them with leaving, as theres little change they will every give you any of deal if you just stick with them.

You won't need a new magic eye,and you can use your old box (minus card) for fta in another room.
Simply tell Sky that you had a rep from UPC around and they were offering you a free pvr and you are thinking of changing as Sky haven't offered you one;)

Excellent. Thought there might be issues with the magic eye and the remote.

You'll need a different 2nd remote alright.....the standard Sky remote doesn't work with the Sky+ box.

There's a place in Limerick selling them for around €12, which is far less than Tesco, etc, are charging for them.

the last thing they want to do is cancel your account. I work in a similar job to sky agents. The minute you say you want to cancel they throw deals and discounts at you. The agents bonus is based upon keeping you from cancelling so you would nearly have to tell them 3 times to cancel the account before they do!:D
