Hi, I've just bent my car key out of shape a little bit and need to get a spare one cut. I just tried a locksmiths but they said they could only cut me a key that would open the door and not start the engine. This would need to be chipped and would end up costing me €100. Any suggestions on a work-around?

chip will be needed to start the engine though, which is the crux of the issue here

field this to the rest of the forum: would putting the newly cut, unprogrammed key, on the same bunch of keys as the broken key be enough to disable the immobilser?

No,you don't.It will work. Broken key has to be taped to the other key or just held very close :)

Is it just the metal bit of the key thats bent? I bent a car key a few years a go and straghtened it in a vice with no problems at all. Vice like this one http://birdhouse.org/blog/2005/10/16/my-amy-vice/

Yes you do. I've tried what you've suggested. it's an Urban Myth.

I'll agree with TestTransmission here - Don't see any reason why having it on the same keyring wouldn't work for a 01 Astra.

But a locksmith with modern equipment should be able to do you a fully working key for that for around 30 with a transplant or maybe 50 with a new chip. I'm 95% certain I got 2new keys (1 transplant, 1 totally new) for under 80 at the height of the Celtic Tiger. No point going to a dealer for a key for a 10yr old Astra.
