Vista Home Premium cannot install any printer drivers-Help

I'm at the end of my rope with windows vista. I have tried everything i know how to do with this error, and am in the middle of downloading SP2 as a last option to try to fix it (which itself fills me with dread). I'm hoping somebody can help point me in the direction of something simple in vista that i might have missed.

I am trying to install a HP deskjet 3050 multifunction printer, which i know works fine. I have had the same EXACT issue with a Canon Pixma MFP as well a several other bits of USB hardware, so i know the issue is the pile of horse sh1t that is MS Vista, as it's the only common factor.

I simply can't get vista to recognise the drivers for any of this USB printer hardware. Every time i try to install, i run setup software & drivers, but as soon as i come to connect the peripheral via the USB cable i get the annoying "found new hardware" wizard, which doesn't recognise or see the drivers i've just installed, and tries to find drivers itself by first searching locally, and then on windows update, which fails. I then use device manager to try to point vista to the installed drivers or to look on the install cd-rom or look wherever i've extracted up-to-date downloaded copies to, or whatever, and constantly get the same error:

"windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while trying to install it...the system cannot find the file specified"

I have tried everything i can think of here. Letting windows search, telling it where to look, Multiple uninstall/reinstalls, rollbacks, booting up in safe mode & selective startup via msconfig, running everything in administrator mode, unhiding the Administrator account via command prompt and logging in there and trying everything again, and NOTHING works.

I'm fairly I.T. savvy, and have been completely stumped by this. There are several suggestions online, from hotfixes (which vista says don't apply to my system) to reinstalling USB root hubs, which isn't the issue, as other USB stuff is working fine. I'm at the point now where i've been so burned by windows vista, and am so sick of microsoft generally, that i'm going to upgrade to SP2 and (assuming that that doesn't f*ck things up any worse, as MS service packs have done for me in the past) if it doesn't fix the problem i'm done with MS products alltogether and am either installing linux or buying myself a macbook.

Has anybody had any experience of this issue? I'm going nuts with the shoddy piece of crap that is windows vista, and cursing microshaft and their non-existent support for it. Can anyone help?
