I was looking at a washing machine and fridge today (Hotpoint) and the salesman said there's very little difference between the main brands and inside the machines most of the parts are the same.

If this is true how do I determine what's a good and a poor machine?

Also what's the typical lifespan of a washing machine today?

difference nowadays is build quality - a lot of machines use same parts but the technology is unique to each major brand
Bosch is about the best entry level machine at the moment
length of time it lasts depends on how you look after it - nobody services washing machines but they should as they have moving parts - when it breaks they repair (or not )
stick with the major brands bosch zanussi hotpoint(indesit)
stay away from Hoover and candy , excellent features but piece of crap (build)
beko are a good machine for handy money stay away from finlux nordmende and especially Thor (Chinese zanussi)

    Anyone here bought off MDH?

    www.mdh.ie

Their Hotpoint machines are cheap but they've no Bosch at present.

most of them are second hand machines - 'graded' is the term they use

Are they worth buying? Will they last?

who knows - they were broken they fixed them

take the serial number off the silver rating badge and ring hotpoint service - they can tell you year of manufacture- (you can do that with any brand now )

    | was out there today and I never thought of that.

I can get a fridge freezer and a washing machine off them for EUR500 including delivery. It'd cost me over EUR800 to get it from DID or somewhere similar.

I want to get 4-5 years out of it thought.

MDH offer a one year guarantee...

If you're looking for new, keep an eye on Harvey Norman Deal a Day. I got my zanussi washing machine using the code. Store price 390e, Deal a Day price 199, got the guy to throw in a free 4 year replace or repair warranty and free delivery. They do a different deal weekdays.

A lot of the smaller places can also offer good deals when buying more than one appliance, especially when cash is offered.

for 500 euro you could get a decent beko washer and fridge freezer new in power city - try baize house in glasnevin / finglas - thier stuff comes with manufacturers warranty and is genuine transit damaged or grade A not second hand -

Not so sure about Beko fridges after reading this....

unfair to single out beko - zanussi had recalls bosch samsung whirlpool also - nearly every brand had a fridge or appliance recall , just like Toyota lexis BMW mercedes Mazda etc had recalls on motors

its par for the course in manufacturing but gets blown out of proportion by scared consumers

Open to correction here but from what I have read over the years Miele seem to be the most reliable brand or in the top 3 anyway. They are prob the most expensive though. http://www.miele.ie/ie/domestic/products/789.htm

If I was kitting out a kitchen and money was no object I would get all Miele products.

p.s I feel like a salesman after typing that

The salesman wouldnt be wrong for example Hotpoint, Creda & Indesit are literally all made in the same factory / production line in Peterborough with just different brand names and prices put on them even though they are literally the same fridges / dryers & washing machines.

Yeah, in small appliances for example Russell Hobbs and Beaumark are the same, despite one being a top price top of the range brand and one being cheap and cheerful.
