VRT on a 2 door Manta GT/E almost 3 times that of a 2 door Manta GT/E

I recently imported an 84 Opel Manta GT/E from the UK. Having brought it to the NCT centre in Greenhills to get it registered I was told they could not complete the registration as my car was not "on the system"

If I check the revenue calculator I can find a 3 door Manta GT/E but not a 2 door GT/E.

Using the SIMI's car history check site I got an emissions figure of 163g/Km for my car. If I apply this figure to an identically engined 3 door GT/E I get a VRT rate of €480. That is 24% of the current OMSP which is listed as €2000. The revenue list the 3 door GT/E at 188g/Km. TBH, this is not a bit issue ATM. It would bring the VRT up from €480 to €560 but I had considered that this might be the case.

However, today I received a text from the NCT telling me they had a VRT rate for me and to contact them. When I did I got a shock — I was informed that the figure they received from the revenue was €1170

I asked how this figure was derived but they were unable to tell me. Instead they gave me a phone number to ring. I was lead to believe this was a revenue number. So I rang this number (053 914 9458) hoping to receive some information as to where the figure of €1170 came from — not a chance! I was told the NCT should not have given me this number. The only info I managed to pry out of the person on the other end of the line was an email address — cvoffice@reveue.ie — I shall send an email and see what happens.

How on earth could there be such a massive difference between two almost identical cars?

Having looked up on line a 3 door 2.0 GT/E and a 2 door 1.8 Manta (which is highly sought after these days due to it's parts being useful for a 16 valve conversion) I found both cars have an OMSP of €2000 — what value have the revenue placed on mine?

Anyone know how can I get a Breakdown of the VRT Calculation? Who do I contact?

Pay it and then appeal. Your case looks strong.

Is there such a thing as a "Strong Case" when it comes to VRT? :(

i have to agree with carchaeologist :)

their pulling prices out of thin air & making them up each day now !!!!

manta gte 2 door coupe used to be on the revenue site ,then they took it off it for some reason !

1170 euro is a brutal price !!!!! one of the lads of the club vrtd a manta coupe 2.0 liter,
2 weeks ago for 740 euro ( which is still a rip off )
so how can they jusifiy 1170 ?

It looks like someone in there reckoned your car is worth over €2,000 on Irish plates. Which it probably is, or isn't it?

Well, if they use their own emissions figures they must value 2 door Manta GT/E's at over €4000 on the open market in Ireland at this point in time — the word "recession" must not have penetrated their department

Did you have a figure for the emissions on your XR3?

If they don't have a figure and you can't supply a figure for that particular model then you will be charged at 36% with a minimum of €720 being charged so you probably did as well as you could with the information to hand. I fell into this position VRTing a Monza GSE 2 years ago.

If you have the owners handbook and it has the fuel consumption you can do the emissions from there. I did that with my 205Gti and it saved me 350e.

Thing is I do have a figure of 163g/km which I received via the SIMI from the DVLA. the revenue list an identical engined 3 door at 188g/Km!

But how much more? 2 times? 3 times?

I remember when importing my Rover Mini Cooper Sport that it was on a completely different depreciation table to a Rover Mini Cooper which was much cheaper to VRT.
I pointed this out them during appeal and they put up the VRt on the Mini Cooper and graciously stated that they had undervalued my car and it should have cost more to VRT but they would waive the shortfall.
From this I deduced that they haven't got a clue about any of these cars and play games with you so that you'll just f*ck and leave them alone.
