From 318i to Mondeo

Time to move on my '02 318i which has been a smashing car for me and really hasnt caused any problems of note. I'm looking at an '05 Mondeo. Any Mondeo drivers out there want to sell the idea of owning a Mondeo to me?

318i will require a fair cash injection to get over nct next year so looking to change motor and with money priorities elsewhere its extremely difficult to move on from my bmw to other motors within my cash bracket. However, i like the Mondeo. Always been a fan but would love to hear from those with experience owning one.

    Ta in advance,

    Trig

It's a solid car, but the petrol versions are a bit alcoholic. Mine's a 1.8 and I get about 30mpg on average.

I hate Mondeos contrary to my username. I had one years ago and feeding the pigeons on a freezing cold morning would be more interesting. Why not get another 318 that does not need a lottery ticket to pass it's next Nct?

What does the diesel equivalent do?

Between 42 and 55 mpg depending on how you drive it. 6 speed 130bhp FTW.

My petrol version is a 6 speed 130bhp, not the zippiest, it's a heavy car.

All relative. Some of the TDCIs have overboost AFAIK. I doubt you'll find another 130bhp diesel saloon that's faster, even brand new TBH.

    they can go pink!

A lot of Mondeo's here in Ireland are paddy spec rough high milage yokes now. My advice is to go to the uk, and buy privately a decent milage, well minded ghia x tddi or tdci. Great value, lots of kit and low vrt.

    +1

I had a 2005 Mondeo back in 05/06, 90bhp diesel thing. Comfy car but not one you'd look forward to driving.

I have a loan of one at the moment and it's the most boring car I've ever driven.

I was driving one of the newer ones most of the week and found it great. A nice comfy bus, drives really well for a big heavy FWD car, good spec and plenty of space for my crap in the boot. Certainly a nicer all round car than a Passat but not really comparable to a 3 series IMO as they are aimed at different segments. In saying that the 2 litre petrol engine has an almighty thirst on the motorway and doesnt have the performance to cut it there either. Performance wise it was reminiscent of a 1.4 Focus despite 145 bhp.

That's a plus though. Someone I know had a dark blue D-reg one and said he never had any issues with tailgating, idiots in the overtaking lane, etc...

Probably helped that he had to wear a blue shirt for work too :p

op what do you reckon needs doing? dont be so sure that a 3 year newer car wont also require work! Mondeo's are cheap to buy, buy you will probably get next to nothing for your car...

Hmm, brother proclaimed to get from mid to high 30's from his 1.8 but he would have being doing very little town and city driving.

Having drove some very good cars and some pretty woeful cars and everything in between in my time I'd rate the Mondeo pretty high. Regarding the Mark III 1.8 version which I am familiar with it seems to strike a good compromise in terms of power/ economy/ comfort/ space.

Rear brake calipers seizing are a known problem on earlier Mark III versions but I believe this was rectified in or around the same time as that model was mildly facelifted in 2003/04 direction.

Swirl flaps have being known to break away and make their way into the combustion chamber causing the engine to self destruct. Its probably a problem that you would be unlucky if it happened to you I think really. Its also a problem that would be associated with your current BMW I do believe Trigger84.

Other than that I think they are difficult to fault in any serious manner. They are pretty solid and reliable. Timing chain on the duratec versions custs down on maintenance costs. I'd go as far as saying they are a very much underrated car and you will buy a lot of car for your money when compared to the likes of VW or Audi for example.
