I expect to launch a website shortly and am wondering about Google AdSense.

Is it worthwhile? Are there other options?

I'm interested in learning about peoples' experiences.

Don't have any first hand experiences, but found this if it's any use?

    Hi
This may not be the best forum to post in but here are some points that may help.
Adsense is the quickest and easiest way to get traffic to your site and get your site listed on the front page for given keywords.
Depending on the keywords/keyword phrases you are bidding on, it can be expensive so it is important that you choose keywords carefully to target potential buyers, not 'tyre kickers'.
Choose long-tail keywords, they are cheaper and likely to bring a better quality visitor.
Breakup campaigns into adgroups relevant to each keyword/phrase and have ads specifically worded for those keyword phrases.
Link to relevant pages on your site - do not drive everyone to your home page
Have your site well designed so that you get max value from those paid visitors i.e. a clear call to action.
Limit your daily budget initially, costs can very easily add up if you dont - walk before you run!

Optimise specific pages of your site for specific keywords, this will help quality score and lower click cost.
Use phrase match rather than broad match
Split test by having 2 -3 ads per adgroup, after each week replace the worse performing ad, keep the better performing one, and add a new one to the split test.
Link your adwords with your analytics account and track performance regularly
Bidding on 1st position is not always best, monitor performance regularly.
    Stick within Googles policies.
Also, check with your hosting company if you qualify for free adwords credit, it is very likely that you do. Be aware though that adwords credit can only be applied to new adwords accounts so if you have yours already setup for a while, create a new one to avail of the credits.

Ultimately though, from a long term point of view focus on getting a high organic listing for your site so you dont have to rely on adwords forever.

Good luck, pm me if you need any further advice
