Car choice, cheap to tax and somewhat powerful..

I am looking to buy something cheap as a second car, I want something under 1.4(tax wise) but still somewhat powerful... which leaves turbo/super charged cars I guess.

So basically a small hatchback, under 1.4 but over 110bhp ish. All I can think of is a Glanza V which of course would be great if I was looking to pull 17 year old girls in my local Tesco carpark at the weekend but not so great for somebody now closer to 30 than 20.

    Any other suggestions?

Doesnt VW have a 1.4TSI that puts out 180hp or something ??

Closer to 30, then insurance wise and tax wise go up to a 1.6, you would have better chance in getting something there. Around 12 years ago I was in the same position, I went for a 1.5VTi Civic saloon. Didn't look like a boy racer but was still able to beat their poxy souped up poo....;)

Yeah, insurance is not an issue but tax is. I currently have a 406 coupe which is fine but the tax on a 2l combined with the OH having a car means I rarely drive it... it has sat untaxed for 6months now.

Sorry did I hit a nerve? I only drove faster when they where looking to race, once I hit the speed limit I held my speed. There is a certain joy in making a bigger fool of a stupid tool....

    Edit, you grow up boy...

Any ideas on Budget? Cheap to some people is a lotto win for others.

What you say should be obvious then. back to OP. Fiat do some low capacity, relatively high output, assisted motors in the Bravo but I'm not sure whether they're within budget. I hear they're a good machine but I do not have personal experience.

Good looking little motor if you ask me. Not beautiful, but chunky, well proportioned and purposeful in its stance.
Did they do a pokey version of the Grande Punto before they screwed up the looks? A quick one of those might tick the boxes.

    Hmmm, tax on a 1.4 is 333e a year, tax on 1.6 is 445, and 2l is 615.

Your 406 is at least an 03 car, and has lost the most of its deprecation by now. If you spend a few quid trading up to a new vehicle with a smaller engine, the tax saving could well be wiped out by deprecation costs. Going from a 2l to 1.4 saves you 282 euro a year, whereas the vast majority of cars will deprecate far far more then this a year.

So don't shoot yourself in the foot by getting a newer, smaller engined car just to save money!!!!

And also, the pure BHP figure means very very little for most normal driving!! Any 1.4l car that is capable of over 110bhp is only going to have that power at high rpm, and you will have to prob drop 2 gears and ring the engine to bits to achieve similar acceleration to your own 2L, especially with motorway driving etc. After owning a few 2L engined cars myself, the 282 extra in roadtax is well worth it for a smoother engine.

Fiat Bravo Sport, 150 bhp in a 1.4 engine, i think it actually falls into the 1.3 bracket, they come with a 4 year warranty so if you get a 08 or later you'll still have Fiats warranty, and there aren't too many of them on the road.

Thats pretty much the exact opposite to what the OP asked for!

he just asked for cheap to tax, considering what it is id say the tax is worth it , just trying to say if he got a cheaper luxobarge, what he saved on buying it with he could tax it for that , he said hes close to 30 so insurance wont be too bad

We seem to have a blinkered view in relation to motor tax as part of the overall cost of motoring. It's a small component.

An 08 or later diesel will give the op the max. power and minimum tax, but might not be suitable for urban or stop start driving, with low annual mileage.

A Fiesta Zetec S 1.6 Ti-vct with 120bhp costs €156p.a. to tax, so might do the trick?

I know glanza is off the books, but what about Toyota cynos? There are 1.3 and 1.5 versions. They are not so comman and it does bot have bad image.

I know few fellas who are over 25 with kids and have glanza's with pretty amazing figures. They don't give two ****s they got bad image, they just enjoy theyr cars.

There is similar thread in modified part of forums. Unfortunately there are not many small engined pocket rockets out there anymore.

This makes alot of sense, I might hold onto it for another fews months and reconsider it then.
