Part of the TY experience is that he find his own work placement. It should really be him here asking, not you.

His school should be able to give guidance as they will know what sort of places are covered by their insurance.

What kind of careers is he interested in? When I was in TY I thought I wanted to do law. Two weeks work experience shot that idea out of my mind. Got him to ring around places that he might be interested in working at, most places will take someone if they ask.

As said above, it's his responsibility to find somewhere!

Very few places are taking ty students and some of the recommended placements on the list have gotten a bad report, particularly D.S.P.C.A , he is big into computors and bikes and the reason i am posting is to find feedback from parents as well as the kids themselves!

He has asked in tons of places, they will not hire anyone even for no payment! And i thought someone on this forum might give him a heads up as to good employers who will guide the students in the area they want to continue on. He is losing hope at finding anything.

Do you have any friends who could pull a few strings in their workplace? Or does the school provide any sort of list you can refer to?

No , i dont, the school has provided a small list , however two of the places are no longer there, one has moved to i dont know where and the other is closed for renovation!

It might be worth typing up a few letters and sending them out. It's easy to dismiss a phone call but at least if they get a letter, it might stick in their mind. Something like "I am a very hard working individual with a good work ethic. I am very eager to learn and would approach any oppurtunity with great effort" or something waffely along those lines.

Have a look at www.transitionyearhelp.com for some ideas on work placement and community care opportunities (as well as lots of other things to do during transition year).

I would recommend everyone to start searching and sorting out your work experience right now. Everyone in your year will be looking for a job at the same time, and it could be tough to get something, so you might as well try organise something now. Save you the hassle later on too.

    Hi,

I completed TY a few years, and I found my work experience myself.
It is really undervalues work experience.
I don't have anywhere for you to look but advice wise I would tell you to get him to look hard himself, to get as much from it as possible and it really is who you know not what you know... I learned that through experience.
