Red Apples ...

... what the fudge happened to red apples? I haven't seen one in about 20 years! I remember as a child in the 80's beautiful deep red apples that tasted delicious but these days the closest thing we get is a shítty green apple with red streaks!

    Anyone know why?

Did you develop colour blindness in the late 80's?

After a brief bit or research (bored in work!) it turns out I'm talking about the Red Delicous which saw a delcine in popularity in the late 90's and is now only available really where the grow it in Washington state. :(

On the plus side it appears to have been highly engineered so maybe its not as good as I remember and its for the best that its not around to tarnish the my fond memorys! :D

In the 1980s heyday of the Red Delicious, it represented three-quarters of the harvest in Washington state, epicenter of the apple industry. By 2000, it made up less than half, and in 2003, the crop had shrunk to just 37 percent of the state's harvest of 103 million boxes. Red Delicious remains the single largest variety produced in the state, but others are ascending in market share as rapidly as Red Delicious is dropping, notably Fuji and Gala

I feel your pain!. I only like really dark red apples and could'nt get any all year. Was in the Milk Market in Limerick Saturday and a local grower had big bags of crumbly sweet dark red apples for 2.50 a bag.
I told him I can't get them anywhere, he says he's there every week and not selling a lot, but the season is over now he wont have them anymore this year.
I think a lot of people dont like them. Personally biting into a green apple to me is like biting into a bitter lemon.

Care to elaborate? I can't find anything to back up your statement.
