Do I need a visa for a 12 hour layover in China (Shanghai Airport)

    I am an Irish citizen and passport holder currently living in Melbourne, Australia. I am flying from Melbourne to Seoul, South Korea on the 20th August 2011 for a 2 week holiday in South Korea. I have a 12 hour layover in Shanghai Airport.

    Do I need a transit visa for China?

    I found the following on the Chinese embassy website which suggests I dont need a visa but that I need a visa for my destination country:

    5. G visa for transit
    To Transit from China, a valid visa for the country of destination is required. Irish passport holders do not need visa when transit from China within 24-hours without leaving the airport.

    I am a little confused as I will be going to Korea only on a holiday and so will not need or have a visa in advance to show people at Shanghai Airport.

    Anybody know more about this or have been through the same experience?

    Getting a bit worried as my flight is less than 2 months away and if I need a visa I'll need to get it done quickly.

    Will you be leaving the airport? Presumably you will be going to a hotel for the 12 hours.
