    hows a going.

just stuck in 2 minds at the moment about which of the 2 to go for

both are 96's and basically il be doing a lot of travelling so im wondering how good both are on petrol, i heard the 1.5 vti's have some sort of econ or something that saves fuel when drove at low revs? would the 1.6 sohc coupe also have this...

i know the 1.5 vti has a higher rpm too of 7000 while the coupe sohc vtec has a lower rpm of 6000.

both are sohc vtecs so can anyone explain the difference and which one would be the better one to go for?

both have similar milage and long nct and pretty much the same price only 200 in the difference for the coupe but it has 6000 less miles, just looking for someone who knows there civic's to school me :D.

    cheers

Ah, brings me back to my boy racer days :)

The 1.5VTI is 3-stage vtack, about ~125bhp, it has the best of all worlds, ecomony and a decent bit of poke. The 1.6 you're on about is similar (same?) power, but doesn't have economy vtack.

The coupe looks nicer, and the 1.5 is a jap import and has no immobiliser so it's easier to rob.

At a guess taking it handy in the 1.5 would get you about 50mpg and the 1.6 would do around 40 (I had a 1.6 myself and my next door neighbour had the 1.5, but that was a loooong time ago).

Cheers bud, im still in 2 minds. Im hearing the 1.5 vti's are rare enough and it would be nice to have a civic thats a bit unique but like what you said the coupe's are nicer and it has a sunroof with 6000 less miles.

Im slightly starting to favour the coupe even though its slower and possiably a bit heavier on the juice, im not a boy racer at all me old car gave way last week so im dertimned to buy something reliable and the civics are really the best in my price range.

Ah fu*k im going of me head here!

ive a 1.6 vtec and tbh, if you drive it like a granny its alright.

id get 25-35 mpg depending on how heavy the right foot is, though thats a dohc eg6 not the 1.5 or single cam or 1.6 single but ive driven the 1.5 and its ok... the 1.6 seemed a bit gutless tbh tho it had 200kish on it.

imho, you engine projections are a little high, if it was me id go for a 1.4 vvti corrolla ( pokey enough, good econemy cheaper then civics and just as reliable. )

chances are you'd get a 98-02 for 1000-1500 with some test and maybe tax if your lucky too !

not that i dont like civics but their are far too many bad ones still going ( thats the problem... you cant break them )

If memory serves, the EK-series civic's had a 90bhp SOHC V-Tec engine in the 1.5's from Japan. A different unit to the 125bhp 1.5 v-tec's that were in the EG Civic before that.
Also, I don't think the EK Civic Coupe came with any other engine choice than the 1.6 non-vtec and the 1.6 vti, which was the 160bhp DOHC v-tec model. The non-vtec was around the 110bhp, and not a fantastic engine really, reliable and average enough fuel economy. Most of those were US built though, where as most of the vti's were Jap built.

Nah, the vtack engine in the 1996 jdm model is 125bhp. VTI badge.

Again, nah. There ware 3 engines, all 1.6. LS, SR and VTI. SR was sock vtack.

There is definitely a 90bhp 1.5 SOHC v-tec engine in the jdm model. There is no 1.5 UK model. I have never encountered a 1.5 125bhp EK Civic, only an EG one, they must be rare enough.
    Also, it's V-Tec, not vtack! :)

That's be the vtack-E model, which was economy. EG, not EK tho. No other 90bhp 1.5 models had vtack.

Nah there is, a 1.5iLS. Every body shape, including the 5 door hearse. But Not the coupe tho. Coupe only had 1.6 engines.

Nah, jdm Civic VTI, was both EG and EK. They are rare as you say tho.

alright sound for the help lads im still no closer really to makin me mind up, il give myself til friday because im looking to buy this weekend. from what i gather there isnt a huge difference fuel wise seperating the 1.5 vti and the sohc coupe so its not bothering me as much now also from what i can gather the 1.5 vti is a better more reliable engine?
imho, you engine projections are a little high, if it was me id go for a 1.4 vvti corrolla ( pokey enough, good econemy cheaper then civics and just as reliable. )

no interest in them, i want something with a bit of pull id go for a 1.6 g6 corolla no problem but there out of my price range. the 1.4s are too slow my mate had one but they all seem to have very high millage which puts me of them, i know corollas are bulletproof but i dont want anything with over 100'000 miles.
    I'm selling a 95' 1.5 VTI if you have any interest... ;-)

lovely car mate id be interested if with was a good bit cheaper, whats your bottom line on the price? i wouldnt pay over 2k for a sohc vtec you would get a dohc at that price these days.

    Reliability would be the same.

Get the 1.5VTI if you want fuel economy and a (slightly) quicker car, but only hatchback (or saloon) form.

Get the 1.6iLS or 1.6iSR coupe if you want the nicer looking car with a bigger, but less practical load space (try get a fridge into the coupe!).
