a friend of mine is looking to get a new car. she was thinking alongs the lines of a passat or mondeo 01-03 ish maybe about 3/3500 to spend. diesel only. needs to fit two child seats and a booster seat in the back..

which would the better choice between the two be. i know a bit about the passats but nothing about the mondeos except they give a bit of trouble with fuel pump and injectors??

if anyone can let me know anything about either or recomend something else worth looking at please do

    cheers

The Mondeo will work out cheaper. The cost of parts and servicing are less expensive for fords generally. It's also a way better drivers car. Mine fits two child seats and a booster, but just about. You have to struggle to get the belts tied. I'd say the Passat would be the same in that regard.

In general you will get more for your money with the Ford, and they are good cars and the 2.0 TDCI engine is a good one with proper maintenance, ie full service history is essential. Try get the hatchback as its much easier for everyday use.

With that budget though I would go down the petrol route though because you will find a nicer newer one with far less mileage probably for the money and any expensive problems with the diesel will wipe out any fuel savings made over the equivalent petrol engine.

This one looks good for example

If you wish for something different and diesel how about this a Citroen C5 HDI?

I hate always suggesting this car but a older Skoda Octavia with the 1.9 diesel engine is another good choice plenty of space too.

Smallest engine in the MkII Mondeo was 1.8 litre petrol.

was it only the newer model that got the 1.8 tdci ??

id go mondeo imho, preff with the 2 liter engine as their a fine machine; no really... fords are getting half decent again ( and hell is now slightly colder )

From having the to 2007 Mondeo, I can tell you now that 2 child seats and a booster will not fit into the back. I have an 2008 Mondeo now and can only fit 1 child seat and 1 booster in the back. The eldest fits between the seats.

TDDi engine is the old type Direct injection
TDCi is the common rail engine.

nice ghia x spec, I've had them, nice car, the heated leathers great in the winter;)

TDDi is more reliable too. I wouldn't dismiss it straight off tbh, especially a nice spec 130 brake model.

I know someone that had the basic 90 brake TDDi as their own taxi for over 8 years and put up astronomical mileage on it with no major issues. He sold it to a guy who uses it North Cork to Cork everyday and I still see it regularly on the Fermoy bypass so I assume it's still going strong.

yep, they're a great car, i've one in stock right now and use it, they're great value for money, drive better than a passat, have a timing chain engine, parts are cheapish, comfy etc.:)

Hmmmm, dunno, all the usual saloons have the same kinda door to door back seat width give or take a few mm's.
