I have a one series due nct shortly.
The run flats that are on it are well worn and will need replacing.
I am thinking of going for standard tyres as i cant afford the run flats.
Will there be an issue with the nct if i dont have a spare tyre or run flats?

What price should four normal tyres be, 16"?

I have looked at getting second hand tyres from tyreland. Anyone got any opinions/info on this?

No issue as long as you have a can of tire weld. A lot of MINIs made by BMW came with 15" non runflats and the equivilant of tire weld in the boot.

NCT won't care so long as they've got the E-mark, and you don't mix tyres on the same axle

    Sect 37 NCT manual
    Tyre Fitment
1 Tyres fitted to individual axles are not of the same size, aspect ratio or type (i.e. cross ply or radial ply). See note (b) below.
2 Radial ply tyres are fitted to the front wheels but not to the rear wheels.
3 Speed rating of tyres cannot be determined on inspection or is insufficient for maximum legal speed limit.
4 Space saving tyre fitted on an axle.
    5 Tyre protrudes beyond bodywork.
    Direction and Location
6 Any tyre fitted in the incorrect direction (directional tyres) or wrong side out (asymmetrical tyres).
    Tyre type approval
7 An E-mark or e-mark is not visible on the tyre.

Spare tyre does not form part of the test so you can't be failed on it regardless of it's absence or condition (see Sect 36 & 40). A can of tyre weld is not required by the NCT in lieu of a spare tyre.

Have you priced run flats recently?

I got prices last week when I was in getting an alloy fixed, was very suprised, approx €30 extra for a run flat. They were 205/55/r16, I assume that the 1 series takes these...

    I was quoted €160 each.

Was quoted €125 each, didn't check if that included VAT, as wasn't buying at the minute.

If your around north Dublin, that price was from cambells garage in Dublin7/11.

    Thanks.
    Dont know what to do.
Maybe i should just bite the bullet and let the nice people at mastercard pay for them for the next few months!

im not sure what size tyre you need but think these will fit..they are a little bit cheaper and a half decent tyre as well...all you need is somebody to fit them http://camskill.co.uk/m62b0s2122p15794/KUMHO_TYRES_CAR_KUMHO_KU31_ECSTA_SPORT_KUMHO_KU_31_-_205_55RF16_91V_RFT_TL_

Should be no problem, M BMWs have standard tires and no spare, just foam and an electric pump.

Go standard, I changed my runflats to standards when I had the chance ( all 4 needed changing at the same time) €800 for PS2, as opposed to about €1300 for the runflats. Much nicer ride on these too...

The OP's on 16" RFTs, they'll cost less than half of what yours would have and the ride quality will already be far better.

I had my first spin in a 118D over country roads on run-flats last night. The tyre noise was very intrusive and the ride quality was awful, crashing and banging over bumps and hollows.

Switch to regular tyres, your back, ears and pocket will thank you.
