Looks like that's only to view the archives (1859 - 2008), not the current stories.
I don't get why New York Times (I don't read it, but hear about it) has a paywall, where you have to pay after reading like 28 articles per month, even though people get around it really easily (e.g. through direct links).

Have a subscription with the The Times (England).
(Its cheaper than the Irish Times too!)
Far superior site structure-wise, greater massive content and great reporting.
I can honestly say, its well worth it.

I'd love to know where the IT came up with those rates from?

From a historical pov I'm actually interested in this service I'd defo subscribe (and as such I'd imagine others would too) for a reasonable amount per year (say something like €20-€30) but I don't know who'd actually pay for that outside of some professional venture.

I'd rather live in ignorance of world events than pay prices like that.

    Tabloid reader?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Well speaking for The Times (England)
    * Their research is through, with facts, figures, its sources and related topics, clearly laid out on on the same page at times.
    * Every story comes with cosponsoring links (this aids/speeds up research greatly)
    * Their search engine is very accurate.
    * Their site content in huge and sub-divided into many but clear areas.
    * Its like an encyclopaedic vault that is by the minute constantly updated.
    * They give away some serious free stuff.
    * They are more reasonable in price than others of less quality.
    * There is far less inflated celeb crap (Jordan/Britney/Lohan, etc... VERY rarely get a mention)
    * There is NO adverts or pop-ups intruding ANYWHERE.
...And thats just off the top of my head.
