Up to now i've been getting my car serviced in the garage where i bought it but a local mechanic can do it cheaper. Do the dealers do a more thorough service ?

That really depends on the two garages in question. You'll find many people here telling you that main dealerships are incompetent & overpriced - in my experience, this is often but not always true. Local mechanics, however, also vary between the excellent and the appalling. IMO you really want to hear a few personal experiences of the garages in question.

I've never had any problem with the dealership re work done but my local guy is way cheaper. I've asked around locally but no one has got work done by him or knows of any one that has. Dont want to offend him by asking him does he do as good a job as a main dealer. Might just bite the bullet and go back to my dealership.

Just so you know, main dealerships are open to negotiation on service costs.
