    Howiyas,

Im graduating on Thursday this week. I know the letter says that I have to wear a tuxedo with a bow-tie but I'd rather not as I ****ing hate them.

I'm sure I've seen a few guys around the arts block at graduation times in the past, wearing normal suits and ties.

Can anyone who has already graduated tell me if I'll be allowed in with a normal black suit and long tie?

    thanks

Rule book says tux/dinner jacket bow tie, unless you are in the military or holy orders where you may wear your normal attire of your service/faith

Failure to present yourself suitably attired may result in a refusal of admission

If you wear a black suit, white shirt and something black as a tie you might slide by as the gown covers the rest but you will look out of place.

Its not as if they don't give you the address and phone number of tux rental shop with the letter!

You'll easily get away with a black suit, but the bow tie is a must.

To be honest, if you've a black suit, white shirt the only thing to add is the bow tie. It looks better in the pictures with your friends and family. I went the whole hog last April with cufflinks and braces... I know, I'm a knob!:D

Thats not the whole hog, especially considering that I personally have never seen a tuxedo shirt that can be done without cufflinks. The whol hog would be top hat and cane, big sheepskin over coat and a golden grill for your teeth

Some of the lads had normal shirts without the cufflinks, and in comparison to them I was a bit of a knob, I even had a pocket square. I do agree, top hat, cane etc... would be going the whole hog by anyone's standards.:pac:

A mate of mine who graduated said a normal suit and tie should be fine, but this is second-hand information. I agree with you, anyway, I can't stand tuxedos myself and couldn't give less of a **** how I look. I'm really not looking forward to my graduation in November.

To be honest, if you feel you look like a bit of an idiot in a tuxedo, fair enough, I can understand that. But you'll probably feel a little bit of a plonker if you're there and you're the only person who's dressed differently, and everyone else is there in black tie, and after all, you can change out of it right after the ceremony if you're going out.

Technically, you are supposed to wear black tie, but realistically speaking, you're probably not going to be refused admission if you wear a suit.

thanks for all the replies guys.

I know i have seen a few people graduate in normal black suits and I'm sure some of them have even had normal long ties.

The thoughts of getting the 9AM Luas in wearing a ****ing Tux is killing me lol

    then again.... ****'em

I would say thats because you are inately aware that a tuxedo is technically evening wear, therefore should not be worn in the morning. For that you should be wearing a morning suit

yeah thats true, but I don't really care about dress codes for different times of day, i just feel like a twat in a tux anytime of day lol

oh well tux booked anyway, I can just leg it home after and change , then go out for a few scoops

I'm just ball-hopping. It would be nice to see more people disregarding the whole tuxedo rule.

    I'm just ball-hopping.

People who aren't from 1950s Cork actually use that expression?

I've only ever heard army lads use it. I'm now officially ashamed of myself.

I know it was current when my dad was growing up, but I've never actually heard it used. :)
