Ignition Starter button

Just wondering could someone tell me if any type momentary push to make switch will work or does it have to be a specific starter button for the ignition on a car.

Assuming you mean to engage the starter motor ('ignition' is a bit vague), then as long as the switch and wiring are rated for the current drawn by the starter solenoid, you should be OK.

Used one of them before (ignition barrel was not doing a good job of engaging the starter). I'm a bit of a cowboy tho - I just used the "errah those wires I'm plugging into don't look very thick, can't be much current there" approach.

If I was to do it again I'd use a less conspicuous switch, so as not to attract the attention of tracksuits-tucked-into-socks types.

Also - I'd be wary if your car is modern enough to have CANbus or anything - you can do expensive damage to those if you go messing with the wrong wiring (as other cowboys fitting tow bars have discovered!)

That's exactly the same problem I'm having, I have a spare barrel and key but it looks like a hard thing to replace so i'm gonna go with a button instead.
I have the right cable so it should be ok hopefully.

The solenoind does not draw a heavy current anyway. Thats the whole idea of it (as well as engaging the pinion gear), a key ignition switch rated to only a few amps operates the solenoid which closes contacts which is what starts the starter motor, which can draw close to 100 amps in a 1.4 car. So its the solenoid contacts which do the heavy switching on of the starter motor.

So as said, once the switch is rated for the solenoid current then its fine.
