Has anyone any ideas as to the best time of year to see these, I went a couple of years ago and I was too early.

I would think May, June and early July would be best. At least that is the case around the cliffs of Mohar

That's correct for the Saltees too. Unfortunately the best time of the day is late evening, but the last boat back to the mainland will have been long gone by then. You should still see a few along the clifftops during the day. When you land, head straight up the path past the house, turning left at the monument and continue straight over to the cliffs on the far side. The coves along that stretch are the best spots for puffins.

There's some info in a Photography thread from a few years ago. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055304721

Heard that there were some on Ireland's Eye last year also. There's gannets there too for good measure. Just saw one diving off the south of the island about an hour ago.

I always found late May best on the Saltees for not just Puffins but Manx Shearwater, Gannets, Shags, etc.

The experience of an overnight on Great Saltee is second to none in Irish Wildlife.

Agreed ,stay overnight if at all possible , waking to the sunrise over Great Saltee is a magical experience and there's the added bonus of spotting a rarity.
I Try to stay over at least every other year and have got to see some great birds , woke up one morning to see a Hoopoe scuttling around outside the tent.
Late May , early june is the best time for the Puffins allright.

Unfortunately the owners are getting less and less enthusiastic about overnighters.

It depends on who you are and your credentials.

I used to stay on the island for a week at a time with the seabird ringers throughout the 70's and 80's and the owners were never around. We were allowed to stay in the house. Now they are in residence for most of the summer and want their island to themselves (I would too if I owned it). It makes it harder to schedule an overnight stay. The last time I managed it was late November - rather cold and wet to say the least. But well worth the discomfort as the grey seals were pupping all along the beach.
