I have recently bought a used laptop that is old. The person I had bought it from had installed windows xp on it, even though it originally came with windows Me. I want to remove the windows xp because it runs slows on the laptop because it takes up more memory than the windows Me would. Also I want to remove windows xp because it is an illegal copy. So when I tried to run updates on it, windows would not install updates because the windows xp is not genuine.

I wouldn't install me as it's a very bad OS.

You should try a few linux distro's though. Check out http://www.ubuntu.com/ it's a great free operating system.

If you want to install it on the laptop you can download it from the site and burn it to a disc. Then just pop in the cd and restart the laptop and it should boot the installer, if not you will need to change it in the bios which is different for every laptop.

I would really stay away from Windows ME. Not much runs on it any more and it is not supported by Microsoft any more.
Unless you are up to buying a new licience i would agree with Limericks and get Ubuntu which works well on under powered computers.

I would try to stick with XP and a better bet might be to upgrade the memory.

Not an option as it's not a legit copy

please read the charter about advocating stuff before the OP asks.

Then again it is ME even windows 98 would be better :pac:

How much RAM is in the laptop ?
Ubuntu really needs at least 512MB , you could look at puppylinux depending on what you use it for

if the XP install change the file format from FAT to NTFS then you will have to format the drive (ie. loose all files and settings) and do a clean install. You will need to reinstall all software regardless.

ME is an insecure operating system, all programs have all rights to all things all the time. It's impossible to make it even as secure as NT3.1 (1993)

If you are considering buying a new license, it may be cheaper to pickup a laptop that came with XP - it was first shipped in 2001 when PC hardware was litterly 100 times less powerful than today.

Windows ME? Holy hell not even MS admit there was such an OS. It came it failed and was gone from sight in jig time.

I looked at MSDN there and even with my top level subscription I can not get a copy of ME. How about 3.1/3.11 for work groups I can still get them. Ah back in the day when 16bit was all the rage and freecell was the way you checked your 32bit extensions worked :P.
