Wear what your comfortable in (well within reason! :P).

If you like the suit then wear it. No point renting a tux/suit if you have something you like already!

Make sure the tie is pretty close to the colour of the dress.

Shoe wise, a pair of black shoes obviously, but try get a pair you'll wear again!

This is your Debs, possibally the only one you will ever go to. Why would you not take the opportunity to go the whole hog? For some the debs is the only opportunity they will ever have to wear a tux.
Do the whole thing properly. Get the tux, wear black (bow) tie. The tux is formal, no need to match your partners outfit. (if you decide to wear your own suit then you should try to match your tie/pocket square with your partners outfit)
    Enjoy it! :D

Go with your own suit that you like and your happy with..

My BF hates suits and for my debs he had his own black pants, rented the jacket and bought a black shirt and a silver tie to match my dress.. looked very well together..

Dont be worrying over a suit and a tux its all the one to be honest and you dont need to get the same colour tie as her dress either

Rent a tux and match the tie to her dress

Pretty much everyone at my school just wears a suit. I wore one last year and I'll be wearing one again this year. Match the tie to her dress as closely as possible. Then go with either a white or black shirt and a nice pair of black shoes.

What's with the matching, guys? It looks really weird, I think... bit too 'try hard'. Guys look great in a black suit/tux (I'd personally vote for a tux, but perhaps if your suits fits you well which for some reason I imagine it does) then you shold be fine. Get a really good quality plain front slim white shirt and wear a black long tie, slim (but not skinny) and you'll look great.

    Just my 2c though.

Suit vs. Tux? Depends on the school. At my old place it was very definitely a tux affair. Others are different. Either way you're doing the right thing in making sure you get things right, then you can enjoy your night properly.

If it's a tux then it's easy peasy.

If it's a suit then make sure it's clean and pressed and keep it simple and classic with the shirt (white is always appropriate) and tie. For extra marks add a simple white folded cotton handkerchief to your suit pocket.

Oh, and make sure your shoes are properly, properly polished. It makes a huge difference to the overall impression.

One thing - if going with a suit, don't worry about matching the tie to her dress. For example, a pale pink tie along with the red dress would look perfectly well (especially in photos) without appearing to have tried "too hard".

Thank you all...judging by photos from last year in my school its your own choice reall so ill go for my suit i think :)
Lots of you mentioned shoes...ive Black leather jack Doyle shoes for the suit and a lovely white jack doyle shirt with very small black detail on the pocket
Im intrigued by the idea of not matching....ill ask Kate (the one im going with) she can help decide :)
If the tie is going match then it will of course be the same :)
Also liking the black tie idea.....also i have a black tie with white floralish designs.... thoughts ??
\Again thanks guys.....i want to look as well as Kate so really appreciate it :)

Even if she says she doesn't mind about the tie, she's just being polite! MATCH! That's why I'm getting my lad his tie, I want it to match properly! :P

Not necessarily, I'm going to my boyfriend's one, and I really don't want him to match :p I just don't like it, I'd rather he wore whatever he wanted. So if she says she doesn't want you to match, she might actually mean it!

Thank you both...i'll ask her though she will tell me what she wants....she always does so this should be no exception :)

leaveiton what are your toughts on tux v. suit :P

Well, I'm no expert in the matter by any means, but I agree with what others are saying, wear whatever you feel comfortable with, if you prefer the suit then go for it :) Especially since it's your debs, as well! You should get to choose :P

I know I'm not leaveiton but I would feel embarrassed and awkward if my date turned up in a tux. I doubt he would want to though but I think it looks very ott, especially because around here most (all?) lads just wear a smart suit!

    Thanks to both again :)

    LilMissCiara i would agree..:P

...but it's not just a date, it's the Deb's dance. It's suposed to be formal, thats why the girls wear evening dress and the boys wear black tie. Getting the tux, asking someone to accompany you, buying the corsage, renting a carraige (limo), having to endure endless comments from your mother about how handsome you look - these are all part of the experience and without them your debs becomes something ordenary rather then marking the end of a significent 6 years of your life.
Make it memorable. Get the tux.

One of the lads I went with last year wore a tux, white shirt, black shiny shoes, tie that matched, etc & he looked grand. The other wore a suit, black shirt, matching tie & black converse & he looked grand too. They both just wore what they felt comfortable in, and everything went well! Wear your suit if you like it & feel comfortable in it, the girl you're going with will be far happier if you're comfortable & not whinging! :p

+ 1. You are supposed to be enjoying youself.

Remember, if you do get it wrong (or got it wrong in the past) then you can relive it all over again and do it properly. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=73008474
    Enjoy!
