There is some small registration fee but it is nothing like the punitive levels of taxation levied on us here, I'm not sure if it was £36 or £360 but I remember reading "3" and "6" a few years whilst researching it.

    Hi guys,
What is needed to do this?
I have my log book(Registration Cert) here - where do i send it and what do i give to the new owner of the car?
This page is the best ive found and its not so clear to me
    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/ImportingAndExportingAVehicle/DG_4022583

    Thank you!

I assume you want to sell a car to someone who takes it to UK.

What you need to do is to write a contract of sale with him, which would include vehicle details (reg. no, make, model, engine, vin number), buyer and seller details (names, addresses, etc), date and time of sale, and just a statement that you are selling above vehicle to him at that time and date. All these in 2 copies (one for each party) signed by both of you.

Then you hand him a registration cert and off he goes.

You can send a letter to shannon stating that vehicle has been sold for export, and as a proof send a copy of above contract.

    I don't thing it's advices anywhere officially, but that's what I'd do.
In case of any trouble, you should be safe.

It won't make any difference as the DOT will never kill off the reg number in Ireland and they won't remove you as the Registered Owner. You will still get tax/nct reminders for the car long after it has shed it's Irish plates abroad. I still get threatening letters from the NCT and tax every few months for a car that was exported years ago. Also if some scallywag were to use the number and then get eflow letters you would be on the hook for those also.

There really should be an official way to close off the record for good.

Yes, there should be, but we do not have it. When I asked the question in Shannon's office, the official response I got was as follows:
"...When the car is re-registered (in the new country) the authorities in that country will inform the Department of Transport in Ireland and the vehicle will be recorded as 'exported' on the National Computer database."

Which authority in which country will bother informing the Department of Transport in Ireland about the fact that someone imported a car from Ireland . Seriously, there is deep black hole in the system...

Basically fill in the necessary forums, get it MOTed and a cert of conformity. Then send the lot of to the DVLA in Swansea with the necessary fee and Bob's your uncle.

So for the guy im selling to, what can i give him to help speed up the process?
The Irish log book that i got when i bought the car is useless now right?

I could maybe use it as the 'contract' mentioned above, but oficially it serves no purpose in either Ireland or the UK once the car is exported?
