Second-hand bike for commuting

Anybody know what I should be looking for and how much I should be spending on a used road bike (or hybrid) for commuting? Currently use a mountain bike, would like something a little easier going for longer journeys.

What should i be looking for when going to view a bike? Does anybody have any guide prices for bikes such as 1/2 year old hybrids such as a Trek Fx 7.3 or similar?

    Any help appreciated.
    U.

    How long is your commute?

Instead of allowing the bike to decide, it's generally better to set a budget, then get the best bike you can for that budget IMO.

Yeah, that's what I'd like. I commute to college which is 5 km each way and my job this summer is 7 km each way. I like going for spins on the weekend which are usually around 20-25 km.
I don't know what sorta budget I should set. I'm not looking for a new bike because I can't avail of the bike to work scheme so I reckon if i get a bike second hand I'd be able to get one for around the same price? Am i way off?

I'd advise checking out sites that sell second hand bikes

    adverts.ie
    gumtree.ie
    dublinbikeman.com

Are some examples. That'll give you a flavour of whats available, and the price for them
