I have no idea where I should post this, so sorry in advance.

I need a portfolio course as i'm hoping to get into NCAD in the future... thing is, my drawing ability is limited, as I didn't develop it. And i've no drawings to show. All the portfolio courses I found ask for a lot of work... and already had their interviews. But I found this one:
    http://www.bife.ie/PLC%20Courses/pag...ionCourse.aspx

It says the interviews will be on August, which means i'm not too late to apply. So I wanted to ask
    1) Do I get help from the grant or whatever to cover the cost of the course? I know i'm eligible for the grant, just want to know if it covers it.

    2) What kind of drawings should I draw? How many? And what standard are they expecting? If someone could give me a detailed answer for this, I would be ever so grateful.

Thanks in advance, I really dont want to waste 3 years of my life doing a course just because I cant get into a portoflio course/ncad!

On this page http://www.bife.ie/Pages/FinancialSupport.aspx it says I can qualify for a grant... followed by "Students in receipt of the Maintenance Grant must pay all the usual costs of the course." excuse me for being ignorant, but what does that mean exactly? Does it mean with the grant i`ll have to pay for the cost of the course, or WITHOUT? And is that the 530 euros or the entry fee (30 euros or whatever).

If anyone could answer my questions on both comments, i'd be really grateful. I need to know about the drawings and the grant, so I can figure out if I should start drawing or if it's a waste of time :(

If you get the grant (from your local VEC) they will not cover the cost of the course, (€25 when applying, €350 when you are offered a place and a further €200 govt tax) so you have to cough up for this, which is a bit ****ty if you ask me! If you are unemployed for longer than 6 months you may be entitled to the Back to Education Allowance (same as the dole) with this you get €500 book allowance in October.

As for the interview, show them that you can draw/paint, try and have a mix of different mediums and subjects, I would also say that quality rather than quantity would be more important.
Maybe contact the art department and talk to them, teachers are usually fairly helpful to potential students that show a serious interest and you might be able to get some good advice on what they would like to see.
Contact them before the teachers finish for the summer.

Thanks alot for the answer, it definitely helped clear things up a bit :)
Anyway... that course is filled up, altho i'm not surprised. I've no luck...

Will try to apply to Colaiste Dhulaigh.. from what I read, the grant qualifies for that course, and there's no "course fees". Hope i'm not too late :(
