How do we record Saorview Channels?

As things stand ,if analogue was switched off right now, is there any product on the market in Ireland(that can be purchased from a shop) that will enable recording of the Saorview channels.By that I mean, preferably the Sky plus method or a dvd recorder that will do it.

In other words, a standard method and not something using usbs sticks etc, which most people don't want to mess around with. thanks

so if I got a standard walker box to replace the sky box and it was then linked to the dvd recorder as the sky box was I could tape the saorview channels? Also does the saorview box have rf out to slot the signal round the house?

When u say plug in a hard drive, can you explain that and how you would use it etc...

Sorry for basic questions but just want to get a clear picture on this before getting any kit...

Is there no PVR on the market at present that does both Freeview and Saorview? I e mailed Sony about their 500HDT Freeview HD PVR and they told me it wasn't Saorview compatible.

an external hard drive plugged into the usb port.

used for recording programs/ pausing . a usb pen drive will work too , but not as well as powered hard drive.

the saorview box will ONLY do irish channels

I was in Sony shop today here in NI and definitely told it was not Saorview compatible.

You should be able to connect your DVD recorder via scart to the STB. The EPG will allow timers to be set within the guide for recording. Using an external HDD should be the same as the DVD recorder, working from the timer instructions stored in the STB guide. Most STB's probably have RF out but will need seperate STB's for each tv to allow seperate channel selection.

The only standalone DVD recorders Ive seen that would be capable of recording Irish DTT without faffing around with external boxes are some rather expensive Panasonic models with DVB-T2 ("Freeview HD") tuners :(

Im popping over to Poland (I believe their DTT system is MPEG4 based) in a couple of weeks so Ill check if theres anything there (although I envisage language problems)

Inherently you can't sensibly record HD or MPEG4 direct to DVD. Even the £550 panasonic records to HDD only! Later you can "save" to writeable BD (blueRay).

The Humax Freeview HD "HDR" isn't entirely compatible, but it will work better than anything from Poland. You can't read the recordings on a PC though.

So really if you want to "save" to optical disc you need a PC based recorder.

thanks,if I do this, plan would be to replace the sky plus box with a saorview box so hopefully there will be proper recordable types available soon. Otherwise could run with the dvd option, ideally, the cables going in and out of the sky plus box would go in and out of the saorview box, apart from satellite feeds obviously. ..

Er that wasnt what I was suggesting. I was thinking more on the lines of a device that can transcode (and downscale in the case of HD) MPEG4 to MPEG2 in a form that can be burned to DVD that can be replayed on (almost) all DVD players.

I have seen an ordinary (not Blu-ray) DVD recorder from Panasonic with a "Freeview HD" tuner dont have the model number off the top of my head although it was pricey.

For an elderly relative, I want something as simple as possible to record. USB sticks, external hard drives, etc are out. The TV is saorview compatible so wont be relying on any box for decoding

Please explain what features of Saorview would be missing with this box and also what features of the box are not compatible with Saorview.

Am I correct that we're talking about the Humax HDR-FOX T2?

If I buy a saorview enabled tv will I be able to record all channels to a video recorder I use at the moment on my non-saorview tv set?

A SCART connection between tv & video should make the output of the tv's tuner available as an auxiliary or extension input to the video.

    replace 'should' with 'might' .
Only some TVs can do this with digital reception. The output on SCART from TVs is usually only possible with analogue signals.

So even if you have a Saorview TV, you will more than likely to have to get a STB anyway if you want to record ANYTHING - even the same channel you are watching - on an existing VCR or DVD recorder after analogue goes off.

I didn't know this would still be possible.

    Would timer recordings be possible.

Would it work with the Arivia Como box.

Is it the same make and model TV?. Possibly different format or encrypted to only play on the TV recorded on.

Saorview recording on Samsung D7000, you can plug in a HDD to record, min 5400 rpm, wont work with dongles. Havent tested scart out.

Hannspree (LED) can record to standard usb dongles with no problem. They also output Saorview over scart so DVD/VHS/HDD recording in SD possible.

Of course will only work with TV on and the channel displayed and there may be macrovision anti recording built in to certain broadcasts.

So for other channel recording you need STB or alternative.
