Can whitening gel burn your gums?!

I got the dental whitening trays made recently, the ones where an impression is made and sent off to the lab, and comes back as a plastic version of your teeth :D

I don't mind wearing them for the hour or so a day (I've had them three days now) they don't get sensitive etc. and it's not uncomfortable BUT (and this is rather silly) just before I put them on the first day, I was at a hairdresser and the young girl who gave me a cup of tea, made one that looked nice and milky so i took a gulp but it was actually so so hot!!! And in the last couple of days my gums have felt sore as if they were burnt - but it's not the roof of my mouth like would usually hurt if you managed to scauld yourself on tea :o , but kind of under the tongue, near my teeth. I would've thought if the gel did do that to your gums it would be below the front of your teeth, as I didn't put gel on the inner part of the mould.
So now Im confused as to which caused it :p

Usually I'd leave it a few days and see if it happened again when I started whitening again, but in a few days I'm going away for a month and would like to complete the week before then.
