Hi, I have my first ever interview this week. It's for an rpt job in a vec school. Just a few questions you might be able to help me with:

    1. How many people are usually called for an interview?

    2. How long do they last?

    3. Will my subject knowledge be much of a focus or is it more broad?

    Thanks,

If it's your first job they might focus on classroom management, coping with mixed ability, children with IEPs, ways to motivate students etc.

They might also ask about your willingness to get involved in extra curricular activities, which may depend on what you've put on your CV and your subject area. E.g. For the job I'm in I was asked if I would be willing to get involved in young scientist as I'm a science teacher.

Thanks. Could anyone help me on the other 2 questions. I'm just curious about how many others may have been called. Also how long on average may the interview last?

Any interviews I've done have been about 15-20 mins. That doesn't mean yours will be, but I can't imagine it being much longer than that. As for how many are called, nobody can answer that. It might depend on how many people applied for the job, how many had the relevant qualifications and the calibre of the applicants (based on what they put in their application).

If, after sifting through all the applicants it was found that only 3 people had the relevant qualifications for the job, then more than likely all three would be interviewed, however if 50 people applied for the job (as was the case for a maternity leave in my school last year) and all were qualified, well they're not going to interview all 50 so they will whittle it down to whatever they think is suitable. For that particular job last year, 8 were selected for interview. So it's impossible to tell and it's pointless worrying about it.
