I have a 1995 VW Golf CL 1.4 petrol, with approx 50,000 miles on the clock. It has developed an oil leak and I need to top up the oil until I can get it to a garage. I don't have any knowledge about motors and I don't know what oil I need, could someone please advise me?

Off the top of the head you'll need something that meets or exceeds VW specs, either "VW 500.00" or "VW 505.00" (check your VW user-manual / maintenance schedule booklet to be sure which), then look for that code on the oil-container.

The car is 1995 petrol so more than likely the grade is 10w40. The VW specs would be desirable but if it's a temporary fill until you get the garage you don't need to be too particular, but my guess is that any ACEA A3/B3 oil will be good enough to meet the VW standards. Just remember that any oil is better than no oil.
