Push Gmail not working anymore?

I have a HTC Wildfire and push Gmail used to work fine. Now for some reason it doesn't and I have to sync manually. Does anybody know how to set up push Gmail?

Do you have auto-sync enabled under Settings -> Accounts & sync?

Actually just got it fixed. Was looking it up online and it appears that clearing the gmail app cache solves the problem. I wonder will I have to keep doing this sporadically or was it a once off?
