Hi, Just need some advice please. There are horses on our land and we do not know who owns them. we have written to our local authority who rang us to say that they do not deal with horses on private land. What will we do? Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Ring the warden in your area. The number should be in the phone book. You could also ring some animal shelters and see if they'll take them.

If the horses are on private land the local authority still have to get rid of them. I work for some local authorities and all the horses we have to get are on private land bar a small number. We take them because we're obliged to not because we're doing anyone a favour.
If it were 40 matresses or 100 tyres we would tell you its your own look out but its different with horses. That council are chancing their arm. I can find that piece of legislation on monday that compels us to collect off private land if you need it. We've destroyed scores this year already and impounded lots at 3 in the morning:mad: Huge expense to the tax-payer.

OP how long have the horses been there out of interest? Was talking to a mate about just a scenario a while back, he mentioned that it is one way of taking land under squatters rights, i.e. you have to prove you were using the land and grazing horses is one way to do this. It's a long time it has to be done, 12 years for private land and 30 for public but people do chance their arm.

Wrong. Mere grazing of animals would tend to be insufficient to create rights. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055169446
