I am wondering if anyone knows how to use a smartphone as a modem for a laptop? I've heard its possible, but have no idea how to use it, and would be grateful if anyone has any clues or hints.

On my HTC I can set up a wireless hotspot. There is an app built in by default. It's quite easy and works quite well.

It's called tethering and some providers don't allow it. Google tethering and your phone model for more info.

Thanks, I googled "tethering" and found a youtube video for my phone explaining how it can be set up as a portable wi fi area! Perfect. Thanks.

most phones the last few years work as modem if you connect with data cable to laptop... a usb connection in almost all cases these days

wifi tethering as said above also an option, but battery life on the phone usually short if used like this

ah I didn't know about the cable. My little wildfire battery lasted a heavy tethered train journey from London to Edinburgh so I was quite impressed. Was much more convenient not to use the cable due to limited space.

But in general the cable is probably the way to go.
