I don't think that many DCU students choose to live in the city centre - I personally don't know of any that do (unless they're on Intra placement and working in the city centre). City centre rents would usually be a bit more expensive than the rents in the DCU area so that could be a big reason people why don't do it, as well as the distance and the fact that most other students live locally to DCU.

There are plenty of buses going to & from DCU regularly - 4, 13/a, 11/a/b and 19a. The journey is only about 20 minutes or so in good traffic, you'd probably want to allow at least half an hour to account for waiting for a bus to arrive, etc.

As for heading out in town, almost all DCU students do. Buses from DCU run until about 11:30-midnight and a taxi home to the DCU area is only a few euro each if you have a full car.

I lived in the city centre for first and second year. Getting to DCU isn't exactly a chore - although you swear it was listening to some. It is regularly serviced by the buses outlined above (although there may be more cutbacks down the line). I lived close to the Point so it was only a 40 min walk to DCU and less of a cycle.

I moved on campus for final year and it made life much better, and to be honest I far prefer walking in and out to the city centre than getting the bus if the weather is good and I'm not in a rush.

Just be mindful if you living in the city the last bus from DCU is around 11.30 so any level of campus life can be somewhat curtailed, unless you have mates that you can stay with on or near campus.
