Using Nokia E72 as mifi device

    Hello all,

I have an unlocked Nokia E72, which works great as a mobile hotspot (via joikuspot)

The data I use is from the internet on your phone add on.

Now, there are cases where I would rather buy data from one of the add ons that are sold for mobile broadband products (i.e. Mifi devices) rather than the ones that are sold to access the internet on your phone. The reason is that there are periods where I know I will need to use more data than what an "internet on your phone" add on can offer. Specially when I am travelling abroad, where my phone could be my only alternative to access the internet.

My question is, is there anything I need to set on my phone for this to work?
Does the data used my mobile internet dongles follow a "different route" than the one used on the phones for internet?

I am not sure if I explained myself, apologies but my understanding on this is limited.

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

    Regards,
    Gustavo

    What provider is it?

90% of the data packages, be it specifically for mobile broadband or for browsing on the phone, use the same APNs. Therefore, pretty much the same thing.

I am with Three in Ireland, but I would be looking for a higher data allowance when I am abroad so it could be any provider really.

There will be no benefit in me buying a mifi device, correct?

    Correct, up to a point.
Using a phone as a hotspot is no different to a mifi device (from the point of view of connecting to it).

The only difference is that the hardware in the phone and mifi device might be different, resulting in different download speeds from the cell network. But, seeing as most networks are 3G at best, its probably not going to produce any visible effects.

Thank you! I am getting an average download speed of +1Mbps, with peaks of 2 pn the phone, I am happy with that so in speed does not merit the expenses and the need of (yet) another device.

To close this - did a couple of tests and speed seems to be similar, confirmed by comparing the specs of bothe devices.

I got it working with other Sims also, happy about that.

Nice to see I do not need a mifi now :)

Edit: 1.92 up, 1.53 down as I type.

Yup, it's as described above, I used to use Joikuspot and tether to my laptop, but just watch the data you use on your phones plan, i went over once or twice and with meteors crazy data plans for when you exceed your data limit (which they recently changed) and wasn't to cool but yeah you should be fine once you make sure you don't go over

    Yes, thanks.

And jave you ever tried buying one of the add ons that are meant to be for a wifi dongle and use it on the phone? I was told it should work ok, but I have not tested myself yet.
