Hi thinking of getting a car second hand and i am looking at either Honda Civic 1.4, Mitsubishi Lancer 1.3 or Mazda 323 1.3, year 1998 - 2000.
What do you guys think would be best out of those 3 i.e. the most reliable?

All pretty much reliable on paper, the Honda would probably shade the other two. But at that age it really depends on how the car was maintained by it's owners. The most reliable car built will eventually let you down if it has been abused or neglected.

Add Toyota Starlet/Yaris and Corolla to your list of potential cars.

Found them to be great little cars.

The lancer would be the first off the list.

The 323 will have much less equipment than the civic (presuming the civic is the srs and the mazda is an lx) the mazda frequently topped reliability surveys back in the day but now they're older they burn a bit of oil. Very little else bad to say about them.

I'd have to take the civic out of the 3. Has the best interior, most equipment and is the most modern, although you wouldn't go wrong with the mazda either.

At that age it's all about how well they were serviced. Pot luck really.

The 323 tends to have an easier life than the other 2 as wannabe type r/evo drivers drive the stones out of little 1.3 yokes.

Out of the 3 the civic would be your best bet, If you're young insurance companies will laugh at you for the lancer and the older 323's are awful looking.
