    Hi all,
Thinking of buying a toyota corolla, its 2000 and has 137,000 miles on it. It's a 1.4 with an asking price of €1600.

Does this sound a good deal to people or what do ye think? My own knowlegde of motors is limited enough so any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

I sold a very late 97 one with similar miles for 800 recently if that helps. Sounds ok to me tbh.

I thought you still had this....:D

It's a bit overpriced in my opinion.

Is it a 3dr hatch, 4 door saloon or 5dr liftback?

    Colour?
    NCT?

Way overpriced. That car is worth about 800 quid if it has an 18 month NCT.

Jack that Corolla is a great reliable car, if a bit ugly. For 1600, you should be able to find one with well under 100,000 miles on the clock.

Do you have any specific requirements in terms of engine size, boot, etc? I'm sure the guys here could find you plenty of good deals.

You have 1600 to spend on a car. You can afford to get something with reasonable mileage.

The corolla is a sought after car. I had LOADS of interest in mine and several were willing to take it on the phone for 800. 1600 is reasonable for a 00. Now I personally would get something better and cheaper for the same money but thats me.

97 models go for about 800 but a 00 with the mileage should be only worth 1250 or so.

OP Have you been looking on Done Deal?

Don't buy anything unless you really like it, and the price seems good. There's TONS of cheap cars out there at the moment.

you might know this already or whatever and I might just sound stupid thinking you wouldn't know, but ah the 00-01/02 vvti engine burns oil and I'd say quite a bit at that mileage.
i was kinda in the same situation as you a while ago and started a thread:

Same car. Same mileage. Asking price is a more realistic 1150, though admittedly, the NCT is probably out.

I know those Corollas are great cars. My best mate has one and it never gave him a days trouble, but with 1600 euro I wouldn't touch ANY car with more than 100,000 miles on the clock.

1600 quid is a lot of money in todays bangernomics market. OP shouldn't have to resort to getting any car with over 100k on the clock.

Better yet, scrape a couple hundred more together and you'll find modern cars with only 50-60 on the clock for around the 2 grand mark, i.e Ford Focus, which stands head and shoulders above the Corolla in every respect apart from boot space.

    1950, yes please...

137,000 miles on it and he's looking for €1600! Chancer IMO. OP, please don't make a mistake.

    Just my 2 cents.

I bought a Rare Corolla 00 with 53k on it for 3k, 1600 is a bit steep imo... offer 1000 but settle on 1200

The post facelifted models are not as good as the pre facelifts - the facelifted versions have VVTi engines which are renowned for burning lots of oil as the miles pile on, especially the early versions. Toyota eventually fixed this problem with later VVTis, though some of these also burn oil.

Also watch the gearbox, the bearings can fail on them as well (usually accompanied by a whining noise to let you know something is amiss).

I would look at a Focus or an Astra to be honest - both cars are way way nicer than a Corolla to be in, to drive and are safer to boot. The Focus would need to be a 1.6 as the 1.4 is as dead as a doornail. It is possible to find decent spec versions of both cars as well, even in backward old Ireland.

I have the 4 door saloon model. Got it with about 70,000 miles on clock, now has about 155,000. Has the oil usage issue, and needs a litre top-up about every 2,500 miles or so. Only other problems have been the failure of 2 coil packs, one about 50,000 miles ago, the other just a fortnight ago. I guess that’s a risk in a 10 year old car, particularly after the last 2 winters, but it’s a simple enough fix.
Other than that it has served me well, and is quite an economical car, regularly achieving over 500 miles from a full 50 litre tank. They do need regular servicing (about every 8,000 miles) and the oil levels will have to be watched, but it’s a good, solid car. Comfortable enough too.

€1,600 for an 11 year old POS?
    Ridiculously over-priced.

    A truly awful car.

Corolla is a great car, one of the most reliable cars you can own. If you feel up to it, perhaps look at the older 97-98 model, it has a 4EFE engine which was and remains almost bulletproof.

People slag off the car because it's not the prettiest thing on the road and it doesn't do 0-60 in 2.7 seconds. You've gotta be sensible about this, base your research on facts, real experiences and evidence. I own a 98 Corolla tiltback. I bought it a year ago from donedeal. Asking price was 1300, I got it for 950. I brought a mechanic to inspect it and ran an online check on it. The car has been as reliable as a tank (137k on it now). I do all my own services and some other jobs such as fitting tow bar, replacing rear shocks and drop links etc. It's a beautifully simple car which is why I can do my own work and why mechanics everywhere love it.

    Corolla......Highly recommended.

    As above^

Fine car if a bit dull. Ive owned one for over a year & its a grand machine. Trust me ive had better but it'll do for me at the moment. Of course i'd like to be driving something a bit quicker & better looking but i could do a lot worse than my trusty rolla. Just keep an eye on the oil & if theres a ferocious whine of the gearbox be cautious.

The amount of bitching & moaning about corollas is a bit unjustified in my opinion.

Hey OP, if you're still around, theres one on adverts might be worth a look. Same price but one year older, with a deadly stereo and HALF the mileage:
    http://www.adverts.ie/car/corolla/corolla/toyota-corolla-for-sale/686043

If you got that for 1400, it would be a grand car for the money IMO.

EDIT- Just noticed theres a 2 year NCT on that car. Gotta be worth a sniff.
