Update: CDs only. DVDs working perfectly (and quietly!!). A weird one to say the least.

About three years ago I bought two 24" iMacs for our studio. As with all our Macs, I bought the 3 year Apple Care protection plan for both before their 12 month warranty ran out.

We never had a day's trouble with either iMac until a couple of months ago when the DVD/CD drive blew on both machines in the space of a month. Same thing, a horrible grinding noise, then wouldn't eject discs. Both were replaced without any hassle by Apple under the protection plan.

But both DVD/CD drives blowing within the space of a month - what's that all about ?

Do you have a kid? Check for playing cards or other fun stuff pushed into the slot.

@hobbes: No. Only myself and the wife. And we're VERY careful with it. It will read/burn DVDs with no problem. Read CDs no problem. But the racket when attempting to burn a CD is unbelievable. I'll try another brand (using TDKs). Not really an issue as I mainly use DVDs and flash cards. I have the Apple care so I'll be OK.

@ado100: did they take long to replace the drive (was the machine away for long)?

No, not long at all. Got Apple to approve the repair first, then contacted EVAD on the south quays (Dublin). They order the drive - took less than 24 hours - dropped iMac in at around 10.00am and collected before midday. Excellent service.

Thanks for that. :) Only in Waterford, so a short trip up the motorway.
