Replace your pads ASAP. Ya don't want to destroy your disks. €70 - 80 job for pads???

check the discs also, if they're gone very thin/flimsy looking or look scored/uneven surfaces then they need changing too.

Could just be gravel or grit after getting into pads.

In the words of my mechanic after I left this noise go for a couple of weeks, years ago -

"your pads were worn just about to bare metal"....it was nearly a much more expensive job. Get 'em fixed now!

    No, just no!

Loose stones or other debris can be 'flicked up' by the wheel, and trapped behind the caliper. So I wouldn't dismiss the idea totally. It happened to my cars front brakes last year. It is unlikely to be the cause in the OP's case though. That metal on metal screeching is a very distinctive sound.

Most modern cars have a little metal tab on the end of the pads which will rub against the disc when the pads are around 80/90% worn. This tab will make noise but do very little damage to the discs. it's just to give anwarning that the pads are nearly worn down.
If you don't have this tab on your pads then it is time to change the pads right now.

If there is a grinding noise, you've already neglected the problem too long. The pads have already worn right down and damaged the disks so both will need replacing.
