Was 'Joey' really that bad?

Often described as being the worst Sitcom to grace our TV sets, but was Joey really that bad? I decided to watch an episode or two for nostalgic reasons, and I found myself laughing way too often for a series deemed to be the worst Spin Off ever created. I think the major problem with the show is that it was always going to be compared to Friends, and nothing could compare to what is considered to be one of the best Sitcoms of all time. I really don't think Joey was as bad as everyone was saying, and I can think of many more Sitcoms worse than it.

Is it really considered the worst sitcom ever? Worse than Heil Honey I'm Home?

I would consider something like The Big Bang Theory to be worse than Joey tbh, as bas as Joey was. I remember dropping it when one of the main cast became a love interest. Never saw the second season

The problem wasn't that is was really awful, it's that it wasn't Friends. People's expectations were too high. It was never going to get a second season.

It's not funny in the least though. It's a sort of 'I'd watch it if it's on' show.

Not the worst sitcom ever, by any means. But it was completely unnecessary; Joey (like most of the other friends) had become an unfunny parody of himself for the past few seasons of Friends, so why bother giving him another vehicle?

And the writing was consistently weak; one of two small chuckles from an episode, maybe. But nothing beyond that. Again, similar to the last few seasons of Friends.

It's a bad sign when Drea deMatteo, who was so good in The Sopranos, can't save a show from being shíte. (Completely different show, I know, but I always find it strange when an actor stars in something great, then moves on to something rubbish...)

So yeah, there have been worse sitcoms but it was still a fairly crap show.

As far as I can remember I enjoyed Joey when it was on. I thought it was reasonably funny. I presume you are watching the repeats on TV3 - I've only just noticed that it was on. I thought Matt was very good in Episodes - I'm looking forward to the second series next year.

I got more laughs from an episode of Joey, than I have from most episodes of The Big Bang Theory (a Sitcom with one the highest ratings). Although TBBT is growing on me too.

It wasn't horrible, it just wasn't any good. But what really put me off was that it reeked of desperation. With the amount of female flesh on show it was like the show itself was pleading with you not to tune out. That and the God-awful writing!

it wasnt the worst like people said before it was just everyone was comparing it to friends to me it was like joey was a completly different character from friends

Definitely not the worst sitcom ever. It was pretty poor though, but the worst - no.

I remember it not being great but not dire either. For instance, I watched one episode of Better With You and decided that was one episode too much. I still think the Bing Bang Theory is about as unfunny as you'll get. I don't understand it's popularity!

Wow, TBBT is one of the funniest shows I have seen in a long time. Sheldon's charector is simply brilliant and one of the best I have seen on any comedy show in a long time. The rest of the cast are only ok. IMO of course, I know plenty who have never took to it.

As for Joey, well I just did not get the concept. Friends was a show about this group of people who were extrmely loyal to each other and truly best friends. Then Joey was made and I hardly seen any reference to them being made by the Joey himself, its as if his 'New York' life never happened. I know they probably had to do this for copyright reasons or whatever but as a show it strived way too much to stand on its own, especially when the creators were relying on capturing as many 'Friends' core fans as possible.

Frasier did it correctly for me, referencing previous capers and charectors from its parent show and still maintaining its independence as a show by itself.

If you don't laugh at 3 person chess then ...

Joey wasn't the worst sitcom ever, it was just phenomenally dull. The worst sitcom (other than Heil) that I can remember was the UK version of That 70's show, Days Like These (despite the gorgeous Emma Pierson being in it).

Oh and Upwardly Mobile of course.

See, I don't find that joke funny at all because it's just geeks acting geeky for its own sake. The joke being that their 'so geeky xD roflmao'. It doesn't work on any other level other than assuming that the audience find these character traits funny all by themselves. It's a joke that might be funny if it were 40 seconds shorter.

It's like in the new Simpsons when Homer acts stupid 'because it's his thing'.

I get the impression that Sheldon is meant to have aspergers or something. Maybe the eccentric oddities of AS people are funnier if you're not already acquianted with a few irl. I dunno
