Don't try and trivialise the debate with a smiley face.

Don't make me say it again.

Just stating an unsupported claim repeatedly doesnt make it an argument barely even an opinion. Maybe you should start a thread about 'political correctness' might be more productive or at least tell us why you think it is in the case of the op.
    ........
    just sayin

    edit: unless of course you
    were name checking

If that's all you're capable of saying, don't post here again.

I wouldn't say marriage is a basic human right. It's just a social thing we've put way too much importance on thanks to religion.

Still it's good to see some progress is being made. Wonder how long it'll take before someone tries to get it overturned.

yeah you're right. i was going to back and edit but i didn't bother. its not a basic human right.
and i don't really care about it one way or the other because i don't believe its important really.
the only thing that it may be useful for is for tax reasons.
but if people want to do it they should have a choice.

Yes marriage is a 'social thing' but it becomes a basic human right when there are laws put in place that exclude one person from that 'social thing' over another.
All our laws should be based on equality for all regardless of gender, race, sexuality etc etc.
Ask the majority of hetrosexual people why they get married? will their answer be for 'tax reasons'?

It's a surprise to me to find it is in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It says men and women, but doesn't say between a man and woman.

Article 16 for anyone looking to authenticate the claim.

yes true but a basic human right is not the same as a human right. its very open to interpretation. why can't brothers marry sisters? why can't people marry animals? some people feel that they should be allowed to do so and that they are discriminated against.

i was commenting on the "tax reasons" for getting married as totally personable to me. i see no point in getting married in the eyes of god when i am a non believer.

my own brother got married in a catholic church. all his kids got baptised etc. that is a bit hypocritical when he is a non practicing catholic.

for me a piece of paper does not define a long lasting loving relationship. the only benefit i can see is tax breaks on a practical level.

however if gay people want to do so they should be allowed to do so.

Personally, I don't believe in marriage (for a whole host of reasons which are off topic). However, if someone does believe in marriage and wants to marry someone then they hsould be allowed, ragardless of their race, gender sexuality e.t.c so I'm very happy to here this. Hopefully we won't have another prop 8 scenario. =/
