Cloud formation over Ireland

    Hey guys,

    could someone please explain the cloud formation over ireland now,
    what causes the straight streams?

    Looks like gravity wave clouds.

    Mountain waves. The southwesterly airflow is fairly stable. When it is forced over high terrain it becomes negatively buoyant, so descends again. However, its momentum means it overshoots too low, where it is now positively buoyant, so it rises again, but then overshoots high, and so on. This forms a series of waves, with cloud forming on the crests, and dissipating in the valleys.
