Does an occasionally noisey release bearing mean more trouble is on the way if left alone? Can the bearing itself be replaced and for what sort of money?

Car in question is a 159 diesel. Thanks.

It means trouble on the way but when is a good question. Are you sure its the bearing and not something else.

I dont know if you can buy the seperate but it wouldnt make any sence to change it without doing the clutch as well.

I'm not sure as I have only been told (no test drive yet). Owner describes a 'slight rumble now and then' and was quoted €180 to repair.

Is the rumble on tickover I wonder??. 180 wouldnt be bad if it was the release bearing as there is a nice bit of labour taking out the gearbox to get at it.

I hope it not the DMF. What mileage is on it?

    96k.

Any way to tell if it is the DMF or will it take a trained ear to hear if its on the way out?

Its hard to say but if its the DMF you will hear a rattling noise on tickover but it should go away when you accelerate or depress the clutch. You will see the DMF when you take out the clutch anyway. A new DMF will set him back about a grand..

Would it be quite noticeable consider the noise from a diesel engine anyway?

It would be noticable allright. The best way of describing it would be a big bag of spanners rattling around the place..

Cheers for the advice Corkie. I should be viewing the car late next week. Other than that problem it does have a NCT and a FSH.

There is a wealth of info on them on the Alfa forums. Just make sure you clarify the rattle as the DMF will cost you. Nice car though.
