Interpreting entries in Griffith's Valuation

I invite you to follow this search in http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml:
    Family Name: Malone
    First Name: John
    County: Kerry
    Union: Dingle

You should get one hit, in Coumeenole (you might have been there: it's the southern side of Slea Head).

My interest is in the occupation pattern. All the houses are clustered together, and the houses in Coumeenole North are clustered beside them, giving a collection of about 20 houses. This was a community of farmers and fishermen, with it being the norm for one person to combine both activities.

The interesting thing is that individual landholdings are not identified. There are 262 acres, mostly mountain, and the individual interests are measured by having a valuation. The valuations are £1.3.0, £2.6.0, or £3.9.0 -- in other words, in multiples of £1.3.0. I interpret this as an 18-share Rundale system, with individuals having 1, 2, or 3 shares each.

    What do you think?

You are probably correct. There is an excellent article on the interpretation of GV at http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/GRIFFITH/Griffiths.PDF

On page 5 the author has an example of how rundale is represented in GV and it is similar to your Coumeenoole listing.

Thank you. I was reasonably confident in my interpretation, with the one element of doubt being the unequal shares. I had presumed that a rundale holding involved equality between tenants, but it seems not to have been the case.

The paper you linked is very useful.
